So wasn't expecting that one - Communist Part of Britain

So we have quite a selection of parties to vote for in our area. Today we got our postal voting form and right there on the bottom is a candidate for the Communist Part of Britain. Didn't even know there was such a thing and no way would I be voting for them. Did anyone else know they existed or is this another new group that has popped up recently 🤔?

They've been a party in the UK since the late 80's

Zonder · 24/06/2024 15:08

They're standing in 14 seats apparently.

Piggywaspushed · 24/06/2024 18:43

I know two members. Their favourite hobbies are gathering in dusty pubs with occasional marching.

BobbyBiscuits · 24/06/2024 18:46

Yep, they've been around a long time. The ones that visit the Marxist museum near me are all polite, elderly ale drinkers with slightly questionable fashion sense. Certainly less horrible than supporters of some of the more popular political movements.
I'd be more concerned about Reform having a candidate near me.

We’ve got one too! I was amazed!

Piggywaspushed · 24/06/2024 19:16

Traditionally, Glasgow and Liverpool always field Communists.

GE budget of £7,000 then? 😃

You've taken me back in my memory to the 1980s.. Child (mid teen) was a member of socialist workers party (they called themselves Trotskyist) my partner was a member of the Communist Party of GB. Me? Common or garden Labour party.

The Trotskyist view v the Stalanist view was a sight to behold.

Years later, I heard a comedian talking about his teens. Him a trot, his parents in CPGB, his father shouted that he should not call his mother a "capitalist running dog". I understood and laughed like a drain.

it really taught me a lesson. Both of them thought my view was wishy washy but hardly worth arguing with. Oh no, they'd much sooner scrap (verbally) with each other about the minutiae of their differences.

and yes, I do understand that they didn't see their positions as close, or their differences as small. I did.

Piggywaspushed · 24/06/2024 19:30

There is apparently a CPGBML party too.

If anyone has seen the lovely little Indie film, Captain Fantastic there's a great skit on variations of Communism.

Is that the one where they celebrate Chomsky's birthday?

Piggywaspushed · 24/06/2024 21:18

Indeed it is!

The women's rights section of their manifesto is excellent. Especially the part about exposing ideologies.
Shame they are not standing in my constituency.

The Communist Party formed in uk circa 1920. Gained members in the General Strike. Has had 5 MPs. Like most socialists they don’t want the institutions that provide the money for their policies. So unelectable.,

I agree. I am a life long socialist but might be tempted to go one further if we had a candidate.

MadameMassiveSalad · 26/06/2024 22:40

What is your problem with communists?

If they were standing in my constituency they might get my vote. The 7 candidates I've been given certainly won't.

They have existed a long time, they are not the only communist or socialist party in the UK just the only one who takes part in electoral politics. Why wold you be surprised? Communism is simply an alternative to capitalism, it isn't the evil bogyman you've clearly been led to believe. Might I suggest reading "A Peoples Guide to Capitalism" By Hadas Thier.
