General election 2024

Nope to labour

I was considering voting for Labour, but their manifesto proposal to change the VAT on private education has made me reconsider. I'm not financially well-off, just about managing, and I took on two jobs to afford the fees for my son’s private grammar school. Despite our efforts, he couldn’t get a place in any of the five local state schools due to oversubscription, and our appeal was unsuccessful. We were instead assigned a school outside our area with a poor Ofsted report. Faced with this choice, I opted to work harder to provide him with a better education privately. The proposed VAT changes would make it even harder for families like mine to manage.

For me, Labour doesn’t seem to understand that not everyone who sends their children to private school is wealthy. I don’t like the Tories either, but I would rather vote for them than for Labour.

I hear you @Mrsdeehoang . I don’t agree with them doing this. I also don’t like their take on women’s safety and the trans issues.

I’m really struggling on who to vote for.

Summerhillsquare · 14/06/2024 21:56

I see Tory central office are busy again tonight!

Theunamedcat · 14/06/2024 22:01

They will obviously backtrack on it or make it vanity taxed at 5% because it's unpopular

WomensRightsRenegade · 14/06/2024 22:01

It’s a bonkers policy. But this is all they have. There’s no money to replicate the Blair years, or anything close. So this is the red meat they have to throw to the far left. This and gender ideology insanity.

CovertPiggery · 14/06/2024 22:02

YABU for not posting on one of the millions of existing threads about the exact same thing.

Zonder · 14/06/2024 22:02

My goodness, are there really not enough threads on this one issue already?

Busybee44 · 14/06/2024 22:02

Totally support Vat to be charged on private schools , they are not chartities!

Really think the Conservatives will do anything about it after doing nothing for 14 years? If they had made any effort in 14 years I might have believed it but they threw us under the bus for 14 years

smileatyou · 14/06/2024 22:04

Yep no way am I voting labour

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/06/2024 22:04

Why have you started yet another thread on this when there are already several?

This has been a well publicised Labour policy for a long time, so you've had time to plan for this.

SpudleyLass · 14/06/2024 22:04

I agree.

Also, but not taxing people anywhere else? Only on private schools?

Nonsense, if they;re not taxing, they;re cutting spending on services.

Labour are full of it. So are the Tories.

Funkyfizz · 14/06/2024 22:04

Everyone who can afford private school fees is wealthy.

Isitsixoclockalready · 14/06/2024 22:04

Millions of these threads out there over the last couple of weeks. The policy doesn't seem to have had any major affect on polling and I totally disagree that it's some kind of far left ideology. Starmer is about as centre as they come.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/06/2024 22:05

Again? My oldest 2 went to our nearest walkable school - it was RI - but actually had excellent pastoral care - both now at Uni -both did well - honestly stop obsessing over 'Good' schools - you made a CHOICE - you 'sacrificed' so much because all of us state school parents couldn't give a tiny rats wank about our kids - WE GET IT

I chose to book a week abroad this summer - if the pound drops against the Euro and it costs me more should I cry and stamp my feet and fret or just suck it up and have less spends.

State education has managed under increasing financial pressure - surely private schools can follow their example and not just pass the costs on to hard up, self sacrificing, care more about their kids parents?

BasilsDad · 14/06/2024 22:05

I'm sorry but if you are paying for private school you are financially well-off, even working two jobs, median income in the UK is £34k.

TheShellBeach · 14/06/2024 22:05

Couldn't you have posted on one of the countless threads that already exist on this site about this?

exactly, no sympathy sorry

G123456789 · 14/06/2024 22:06

It's a gimmick policy to appeal to the left. Really how much will it generate per year, a few million. It will cost to collect and administer. I expect it will be quietly dropped or won't find time to go through

Mum2jenny · 14/06/2024 22:06

No way am I voting labour, not sure what I’ll vote but I’m in a Labour stronghold.

RubySloth · 14/06/2024 22:07

I'm more concerned with the fact they will recognise Palestine- A country that hasn't allowed its citizens to vote for years and gender issues.

State education has NOT managed at all!

Houseplanter · 14/06/2024 22:07

This isn't the reason I won't vote Labour.

Funkyfizz · 14/06/2024 22:08

If you don't want your kids to mix with the plebs then you will have to sacrifice that 2nd holiday to afford the VAT.

gamerchick · 14/06/2024 22:08

Summerhillsquare · 14/06/2024 21:56

I see Tory central office are busy again tonight!

The work harder kinda gives it away.

TheThingIsYeah · 14/06/2024 22:09

I'm not a Labour supporter but I don't have a problem with charging VAT on school fees. If some kids of wealthy parents have to slum it with the oiks then great; trust me, if private schools were banned altogether you wouldn't have any failing State schools. Middle class parents with sharp elbows would soon see to that.

Maybe I'm speaking from a position of true privilege. Got a kid who went to one of the finest grammar schools in the country. The best education money can't buy! Mwah ha ha
