General election 2024

If the Tories axed National Insurance what would that mean for state pension?

There's lots of talk about the Tories wanting to cut NI even more and then abolish it altogether.

Does anyone know how they would work in terms of years/stamps people have earned for the state pension? Would it all be meaningless? What if people have paid to 'top up' incomplete years to a full year?

I'm aware some think the state pension will eventually go too, is this basically the first step towards that happening?

Maybe they will move to a means tested model rather than a pay in, get out model.

It isn't a pay in get out model. You build up entitlement to the pension by contributing or receiving credits for a number of years, but there is no individual pension pot for each person.

I was simplifying. You get less if you pay for fewer years.

I’ve wondered this too. Are they planning on scrapping SP due to the workplace pension scheme? What if someone doesn’t work?
So many questions with no answers 😂

I wonder if the scrapping of NI is to eventually Hebrides state pension.
Also the Tories made a big thing about the work place pension.
I suspected then that it was their eventual plan to scrap the state pension.

I bet Labour would also do that. Honestly, disgusting that people contributed and were led to believe they would be safer in their retirement. I am sick of having worked for mainly the benefits of other people. With the crazy people here they would called for anyone who has a house and three meals a day as a luxury. Worse pension in civilised countries and still planning the raid on people who can’t longer work. While other people who never worked would get the pension anyway. 😕

Yes, many other countries have better pensions and don’t have to wait as long to get it.

The Tories would axe state pensions as well.

Surely the Tories give to the oldies as they are the voters.

Edited

What is being discussed is a Conservative policy, not a Labour policy.

The tories are trotting out all sorts of bollocks that hasn’t been properly thought out, in the full knowledge that they won’t have to do it (because they won’t win). They’re just desperately trying to cling on to as many votes as they can so they don’t slip down to third place. It’s just like the madcap national service nonsense.
