I do the same thing. It might have been what Starmer meant.

The same here. Plus our dentist stopped being NHS recently so the option is to pay or to go elsewhere to a NHS dentist but there is none.

Wow that's a disgrace.

However, he promised tax cuts, money for everyone and everything so the Tory faithful will no doubt be happy.

They talk a lot of claptrap about hard working families. Meanwhile those people are stuck in expensive rentals with grasping landlords, stagnant wages, healthcare that is inaccessible, schools falling to pieces, and food banks or charities to pick up where the state used to compelled to support. It’s not that a better society isn’t possible where this happens, it’s just we have these repulsive people in charge. I cannot wait until a politician is in charge who thinks the young matter, and that ordinary people deserve stability and a decent existence. I know it’s possible, because I’ve seen it.

79% of dentists are unable to take on new NHS child patients.
50 million missed dental appointments since lockdown.
Chronic underfunding and a dearth of accessible dental services, exacerbating the shortage of dentists willing to accept NHS patients.
There are not enough dentists (Brexit partly to blame).

"Brexit - Those that voted in Brexit were from ALL political persuaions and that includes Labour

So, Starmer said previous he and hsi family would never go private.
He also stated the NHS was in their "DNA"

So, is Starmer with a NHS dentist or a private dentist??

Why wouldn't a shortage of dentists influence oral health?

staggering 9 out of 10 dental practices UK-wide are unable to offer NHS appointments to new adult patients – while 8 in 10 are not accepting new child patients.

www.bda.org/news-and-opinion/blog/nhs-dentistry-have-we-reached-the-point-of-no-return/

"The UK has 5.3 dentists per 10,000 of the population compared with 6.5 in France, 8.3 in Italy and 8.5 in Germany."

theconversation.com/nhs-dentistry-is-in-crisis-are-overseas-dentists-the-answer-223842#:~:text=The%20shortage%20of%20dentists%2C%20and,dentists%2C%20hygienists%20and%20dental%20therapists.

Councils and their directors of public health are warning that the increase is in part due to difficulties in access to affordable dental care. Previous analysis by the LGA found that no local authority area in the country has more than 1 dental practice per 1000 of the population, with areas that are more rural or deprived being particularly affected.

Someone answered this for you two pages ago - you thanked them for their response. Have you forgotten already?

Is Beth Rigby always as bloody irritating as this?

I don't know but through Starmer's interview she was odd. She'd relaxed by the time she interviewed Subak though.

The ok, ok ok, ok, before sentences had even ended. She let Sunak off lightly and asked him how he felt about his mistake missing the D day commemorations. Poor him. Finally when the crowd were showing displeasure with Sunak she actually got a little tougher.

FFS. Because of the shortage of NHS dentists this has no relevance to private medical treatment, so why are you still bleating on about it?

Of all the things to worry about in the UK at present, whether Starmer uses a private or NHS dentist is of absolutely no consequence. I'm sure he can afford to go private, if he does then that's one NHS space freed up for someone who can't.

A lot of dentists will accept children for NHS work but require adults to sign up for private work.

I am with an NHS dentist but there is some treatment she cannot offer on the NHS.

So if I need it I pay privately for her to do it or I can't have it.

Unlike GPs, dentists and also opticians run mixed practices.

This is why the answer is not a clear yes or no.

Reugny · 13/06/2024 00:05

The OP doesn't know how NHS dentistry works.

PPs have pointed that out.

MrsMurphyIWish · 13/06/2024 06:23

As other posters have said re dentistry, it’s not clear cut because of the lack of NHS dentists. I’m assuming KS does what DH and I do. We pay for our appointments and treatment but the children have theirs for free. That’s lucky! My friend who lives in the next county has to pay for treatment for her children as no dentists will offer NHS treatment to children. That’s a disgrace and I agree with KS when he was so vehement that it’s a tragedy about the level of tooth decay in very small children.

bombastix · 13/06/2024 07:44

What I didn’t appreciate when watching this was the reception Rishi Sunak got in Grimsby. That was very bad indeed; people howling at him outside the studio. I have never seen a PM get such a reception; real anger not some political booing.

I think people are really angry with the current government. 14 years and so many mess ups. Corruption. Lies. Broken promises. Handing billions in contracts to mates. The D day commemoration missed for an interview to spread more lies.

The arrogance that they think they can come out with a raft of vote for us again and we will put it all right, give tax cuts that are unfunded, give us more time. You know we're worth it crap. Then the usual newspaper headlines from the Tory press doing the usual scare tactics. It's worked so many times before, why wouldn't they. People have and will be duped by them.

Who knows which party will win.

BIossomtoes · 13/06/2024 09:04

It’s as if people have finally woken up. Brexit and covid were distractions from the appalling damage austerity did to the fabric of the country, now the smoke’s clearing it’s clear for all to see. Add in the lies, siphoning off money to their mates and pathetic attempts to buy us off with unaffordable tax cuts and people are angry. I suspect they’re as angry with themselves for being duped as they are with the government.

Churchview · 13/06/2024 09:06

It's a strange kind of pleasure/torture watching DSC repeatedly hammering away trying to make some kind of 'gotcha' out of Keir Starmer and his wife paying a dental hygienist in the perfectly usual way.

Honest to God, with all the money and incentive the Conservative party have plus a tame media at their disposal if there was a gotcha to be had in any shape or form they'd have got a long while before some random with an axe to grind on MN.

MissyB1 · 13/06/2024 09:14

And so they should be! When I saw the result of the 2019 election I literally couldn't believe how many people had basically chosen to shoot themselves in the foot again.

ActivePeony · 12/06/2024 22:12

2024 and children's teeth are rotting in their heads due to poverty. That's really bad isn't it.

Interesting that the article suggests that free school meals could improve the situation. I remember how Marcus Rashford had to press Boris Johnson into providing food for children when lockdown closed schools.

If the socialist Starmer is to get into number 10 via the backdoor with a coalition partner/s, honesty is important, well, to me it is. Starmer cleary stated he would never go private... nor his family as their "DNA" was in the NHS

So does Starmer use a NHS dentist or has he gone private for all visits to the dentist.

Some joker even cited no one paid for NHS dentis, lol - I had to post a link to the 3 teirs of payment for those that have to pay

Well, if we do end up with a coalition government, then that will be a completely legitimate outcome of the democratic process. Coalitions happen when the electorate choose not to give a single party a mandate to govern. They happen frequently in many democratic countries. To suggest that ruling via a coalition is somehow shady by using the phrase 'by the back door' is to fundamentally disrespect British values and British democracy. Are you opposed to democracy?

But you needn't be concerned in any case. There will be a Labour government, not a coalition.

Churchview · 13/06/2024 10:12

Literally nobody except you and the Daily Telegraph cares or thinks this is an issue because we have the ability to apply what Keir Starmer said to our own experience of dental treatment, how it's come by and how it's paid for.

We can also look at Keir Starmer's family history with the NHS and weigh up who we think will look after the health of the ordinary people of this country better.

You don't know a lot about how dentistry works do you @DistinguishedSocialCommentator ? As an adult you pay for all treatment, NHS or private, obviously more for private. Nothing is free, not even check-ups. Do you use a dentist?

Yesterday I corrected you re detals charges via the NHS
Today, from a highly respected broadsheet!!

Starmer says he sees private dentist after insisting he ‘doesn’t use private health’

Labour leader previously said he would never use private healthcare even if a relative were stuck on an NHS waiting list
