General election 2024

Keir, what do you think?

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 06/06/2024 16:04

Labour will win this General Election but I don’t think Sir Keir will be party leader a year from now because there are many amongst Labour MP’s who will want to be more radical. Who would you like to see as leader of the Labour Party a year from now and why?

LOL, funny post but the socialist Starmmer had no answers and that is a fact.

A fact that many see coming if Labour slips in via the back door with coalitions partner/s is - Good, old, Anglea Rayner won't be stating in the wings for too long as she has massive left wing support and they will see it as their only chance to have their own way,

The program code for this seems a bit simplistic -
Redefine all lies as "fact"
Keep saying socialist as if it was a term of abuse
Keep on about the back door (who knows why?)

willowtolive · 07/06/2024 09:45

I know when it's a post by @DistinguishedSocialCommentator without even seeing the name. The back door comment is embarrassing

I think it is a really tired Tory trope that a centrist Labour government will be hijacked by the "hard left".

The Tories deployed it in 1997 to no avail. I remember the evil eyes poster. New Labour, New Danger.

It's actually quite a pathetic tactic. Just as in 1997 they are scared the opposition look attractive so they have to make up a fake opposition.

they don’t look attractive, just less shit

IClaudine · 07/06/2024 11:05

Sunak is doing a very good job of making Starmer look statesman-like right now.

Sunak deciding to leave the D-Day commemorations early was unbelievably dumb.

I'm having trouble trying to understand why the word "socialist" is seen by some people as an insult.

I'm a socialist and proud to be one.

Well ‘right wing’ is used similarly. I wish both sides would just admit they’re pretty similar really. I’m a proud centrist and won’t be bullied into taking sides or told I’m clearly a socialist/fascist in disguise.

BIossomtoes · 07/06/2024 11:27

You weren’t and my comment was tongue in cheek. But I’ve noticed you post an awful lot in the same vein; which is that Labour can do no wrong, anyone who says they can is a closet Tory, and in some instances you actually contradict yourself in your efforts to absolve Labour of any criticism at all. It discredits you tbh

Please give me an example of contradicting myself. I’m genuinely intrigued. I have never accused anyone critical of Labour of being a closet Tory, it’s a common MN trait for sure but not one I’m prone to. I have been known to criticise Labour on occasion when I think they get it wrong - I’m not too keen on the pledge to stick to Tory policies on the economy and posted yesterday that I think it’s foolish.

HRTQueen · 07/06/2024 11:39

I am guessing by more radical you mean the left of the party will challenge Starmer and of course they will they shall be a thorn in his side but he has successfully pushed them back

They are in a minority they just shout the loudest and will never be happy or support a Labour PM as a Labour PM will always be more centre left.

Thankfully most Labour MP's will be supportive and just ignore the left wing of the party and let them get on with planning their revolution from the back benches as they did before Corbyn & Co fucked up the Labour party

Starmer has done a fantastic job of making Labour electable again, the party became a disgrace under Corbyn and he lost not one but two elections because the public rejected him not because of the press (yes he got a harder time as all Labour leader do) but because of his style of politics and who he choose to support and not support

Good riddance to him

It was impossible for any of us to know that.

pointythings · 07/06/2024 13:57

@MaryMaryVeryContrary there's been plenty of criticism of the Labour party on the Sunak threads - your comment is completely inaccurate. Nobody with half a brain thinks that Labour are going to be saintly and perfect.

We do however think that they are going to be considerably better than the utter shitshow we have now. That's a low bar, but they will be held to account - I have no doubt that there will be Starmer threads.

Same old garbage from a typically hard-of-thinking supporter of the guy who joined hands with the tories and their rightwing media liars and colluded in their smear campaign against his former boss.

No matter how many times the deluded muppets regurgitate the same old trope, it’s no more true now than when it was happening and Labour’s current polling has nothing to do with Starmer and everything to do with Sunk and his numerous predecessors.

So get something right for once in your life, because you’ve for certain got a very rude awakening coming with this knighted clown waiting to fulfill his ultimate career ambition.

Since you’re so clearly one of those who deserve what’s coming, enjoy!

Well that is a typical response from those that supported Corbyn and kept Labour unelectable if this wasn't the case we would not be having this discussion

I am aware that Starmer does not have the same appeal as Blair and many people are extremely unhappy with the Tories so this also increases Labour voters but the influence of the left has certainly not harmed his chances of being PM which he will be

It has never helped calling people deluded muppets or hard of thinking you should have learnt that by now

pointythings · 07/06/2024 14:55

@srailfonaidraug I thought Corbyn had a lot of very good ideas. I also think he was wrong on a lot of things, the biggest of these being Brexit - if he had come out hard against it, who knows?

But the bottom line is that the UK is a centre right country politically. As someone who is of the left, I find that deeply frustrating, but it is what it is. We can have lofty ideals and get a shedload more Tory, or we can be pragmatic and have something that is likely to be actually quite a bit better, given time.

Sneering about someone who has earned a national honour on merit just reinforces the stereotype of the left as a group of people who are hateful and jealous of others - that isn't a group I want to be part of.

First paragraph above: Classic gaslighting with no basis in fact whatsoever.

If Brexit, Bozo and Thatcherist austerity aren’t enough to convince you of the power of lies from the same sources as the ones stupid people still believe about Corbyn, you’ll still be having this discussion when Starmer proves what appeasing to a corrupt establishment buys ordinary people in this country.

Second paragraph: No fan of Blair but you got something right at least. Starmer can’t hold a candle to Blair but dog-saddle Sunk and cabal have done more than enough to ensure even the dimmest of voters will see him as the lesser unsavoury option. Not many, not any convincingly cognitive, particularly like the guy though.

Third paragraph: making a dash for semantic moral high ground on a level playing field is sanctimonious gaslighting, not an argument. One day it might even be passé enough for you to learn that.

Seaitoverthere · 07/06/2024 17:23

I’m starting to really worry about my grip on reality reading this as I just don’t understand how people are thinking that KS is likely to be replaced as leader if he wins?

He became leader in April 2020 I think it was when Johnson was the PM, followed by Truss and now Sunak. So 3 different Conservative leaders during the just over 4 years he has been Labour Party leader yet people are concerned he will be replaced when it doesn’t appear to be Labour who are the ones who have the tendency to change leaders at regular intervals as we have seen in the Conservative Party in recent years ?

Mytholmroyd · 07/06/2024 17:28

Maddy70 · 06/06/2024 16:29

I think he's exactly what the country needs right now. Not too radical and very strategic and sensible

I agree - he just needs to gain a bit of presence and confidence but I think he can do it

keffie12 · 07/06/2024 17:46

BurbageBrook · 06/06/2024 18:51

Very odd theory. He's not going to be ousted if they win. I like Keir a lot. He's principled, moral, practical and forward-thinking. Mostly I like him because he's NOT a self-serving, morally repugnant twat which makes him very different from the Tories who have been governing us.

Exactly this! You look the words right out of my mouth.

He is stable and calm. As a barrister, he knows how to play the long game. We have seen that this week against Sunak how he let Sunak hang himself.

He is also a happily married family man who didn't settle down until he was 40ish, and he knows how many children he has too. Bonus

We have had enough of "fun" politics. If I want to be entertained I'll go to the theatre. I just want my boring politics back like it was before the damn referendum. Not with Cameron in, though. I'm talking generally.

This video below is only 2 mins long and is absolutely brilliant, explains by another barrister what Keir was doing the other night 😉

Let's keep it real
Labour has been out of number 10 for 15 years
Starmmer is trying to take control by taming the 'left wing,'
but that has failed
Should labour get into number 10 via the back door with a
coalition partner/s, the do you really believe the left
will take it lying down and not want their way???

Don't forget, the unions are the biggest supporters of the labour party
and will want more for the people they represent. Anglea Rayner
is my fav to take over Starmer
