Tonight's TV debate Sunak v Starmer - any predictions?

Anyone up for a watch thread? Maybe even debate bingo. I know I know, don't threaten me with a good time. (Bingo suggestions: natural party of business, Labour has no plan, end the chaos, Rayner will take over, assorted references to Starmer's time as DPP probably blaming for Jimmy Saville again, inflation is down etc etc.)

At this point I seriously doubt anything like this will remotely change the game Nick Clegg style. I read somewhere the only way Sunak could come out of this ahead in the polls is if Starmer pulled off a mask scooby-doo style to reveal he's Jeremy Corbyn, which admittedly would be great telly.

I'm so fed up with the endless rhetoric but will definitely watch later anyway.

and how is the whole 'flights to Rwanda' fiasco going?

Quite. Keir has a sensible and affordable plan to break up the criminal gangs at the heart of this. rishi has already paid hundreds of millions to Rwanda and immigration has risen dramatically (plus let's not forget Brexit , Tory style, was the cause of the surge of "small boats")

Againname · 04/06/2024 23:37

Labour will channel more money and resources towards the people and places who need it most.

Like they always do.

Like last time? (The link below talks about how Labour attacked the disabled but I believe lone parents were also targeted). Hopefully you're right about the current Labour Party's plans though because going after the most vulnerable is appalling.

Really? Not in my lifetime (55+years). Labour always trash the economy and it is already trashed enough now.

Labour didn’t trash the economy in its last term. It was the best government of my (70 year) lifetime.

I didn't realise Liz Truss was a Labour Prime minister?

duc748 · 04/06/2024 23:43

Did Starmer commit to stopping Rwanda, then?

Of course he did. Or to be accurate not starting it.

duc748 · 04/06/2024 23:45

If Labour had committed to that in the past, I wasn't aware of it.

Waterloooo · 04/06/2024 23:47

I didn’t catch all of it but I found myself surprised (and displeased) at how convincing I found Sunak. I imagine he feels tonight was a success.

I can’t stand these television debates and would much rather listen to an hour long interview with each candidate, but I can’t help but feel these debates might be a banana skin for Labour.

Starmer saying he wouldn’t consider private healthcare for a relative was crazy. Sycophancy isn’t going to save the NHS and we urgently need a frank conversation about what a national health service should look like and provide in 2024. Also seems to suggest he’d be fine letting his own loved ones suffer - so God knows what he’d be fine for the rest of us strangers to go through.

He gave a detailed and sensible answer about breaking up the gangs that bring them here. Did you just miss that bit? It seemed a far more sensible plan than Rishi's and far less expensive

He said he wants to smash the gangs. He didn't say how he'll that.

He just can’t possibly understand how she feels. So out of touch.

He has said this a number of times over the years when addressing the public about COL crisis. No you don't fucking understand, how the hell can you possibly relate to people really having to tighten their belts? - utter idiot and think his camp would of pulled him up on this ffs!

Overall, I thought it was a very poorly moderated debate and I didn’t like the format. Too short for decent answers and they were constantly getting cut off when they finally started getting round to their points.

I don’t think Etchingham did a great job on moderating either. As a teacher, it gave me the same vibe as observing a struggling trainee teacher teaching a difficult year 9 class.

Watching Ed Davey being interviewed now really highlights how poor the format was.

I agree but expect nothing more from ITV. I’m half surprised the audience wasn’t made up of the cast of Coronation Street. Just be grateful it was Etchingham hosting and not Mulherne, Schofield, or Ant and Dec!

Though she’s a marginal improvement at best.

I don't think he committed to anything.

SloaneStreetVandal · 04/06/2024 23:54

I don't think he committed to anything.

He did. He reiterated what he originally said last month. He was quite clear that no planes would be taking off.

DorisDoesDoncaster · 04/06/2024 23:55

Both are just so out of touch with normal life. Snouts in the trough. This is just a leg up to greater riches and connections for them both. Neither are getting my vote.

KnickerlessParsons · 04/06/2024 23:57

Starmer saying he wouldn’t consider private healthcare for a relative was crazy.

I agree. Anyone who could afford it would consider paying for private healthcare, even if the NHS was performing at its best.

Lots of Labour voters refuse to use private healthcare for ideological reasons, especially ones his age or older without young dependents at home. So it didn't sound far fetched to me.

Can you not see the article linked to, a mere 5 posts above yours ? 🙄

Viviennemary · 04/06/2024 23:59

Sunak has got some cheek. (My text just changed Sunak to Sunk. I should have left it. About sums him up) Does he think we are all mugs. Fourteen years they've had to improve things. Not to mention that Liz Truss fiasco..

Exactly that. I don’t know anyone who would choose private healthcare if the NHS was providing timely care.

Actually he set out quite clearly. Using the same methods they have successfully used to take out terrorist groups. As someone who has led the DPP he will be well aware that this can work very effectively with enough resources directed to the right organisations.

Agreed. I would rather he was honest that he lives a life of obscene luxury rather than even pretending to understand or care (and if he did, he is the one person who could have done something about it !)

HonoraBridge · 05/06/2024 00:04

I don’t care. I am voting Reform.

Mumwithbaggage · 05/06/2024 00:05

I thought Sunak was whining and awful. The whole thing was very ITV. I know three unrelated people who have (separately) known Starmer well through Inns of Court, music or football. They all speak very highly of him.
