Tonight's TV debate Sunak v Starmer - any predictions?

Anyone up for a watch thread? Maybe even debate bingo. I know I know, don't threaten me with a good time. (Bingo suggestions: natural party of business, Labour has no plan, end the chaos, Rayner will take over, assorted references to Starmer's time as DPP probably blaming for Jimmy Saville again, inflation is down etc etc.)

At this point I seriously doubt anything like this will remotely change the game Nick Clegg style. I read somewhere the only way Sunak could come out of this ahead in the polls is if Starmer pulled off a mask scooby-doo style to reveal he's Jeremy Corbyn, which admittedly would be great telly.

I'm so fed up with the endless rhetoric but will definitely watch later anyway.

I'm not at home so didn't watch but going off the posts I've seen here it's a choice between crap and shit.

Furlough isn't really an achievement though.

Loads of governments worldwide did it and so would labour have if they were in charge. It's part of contingency planning.

Not one single party would have just said stay home, don't work and don't get paid.

Especially the Tory's as it was those in public sector jobs who remained in work in public spaces in the whole!

Agreed.

And Rishi was the one that came out with the crushingly stupid "eat out to help out" !

@Anxiousheartbeat this looks like a plan to me?

Points 2 and 3 are already in place. Point 1 is the issue. Cutting tax breaks in a self-funding system is already creating an issue and for students, I’d be very worried that the precedent of not making education vat free leaves universities open to charging it.

HebburnPokemon · 04/06/2024 22:19

YouGov says Rishi won the debate

CheshireCat1 · 04/06/2024 22:19

These type of debates bring about selective hearing dependent on which tribe your in.

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/06/2024 22:19

Pmsl that people actually think Sunak did well.

Saying a thing over and over doesn't make it true. He was tetchy, petulant and rude. Not good traits.

When someone shows you who they are, believe them.

Anxiousheartbeat · 04/06/2024 22:19

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 04/06/2024 22:13

He gave more detail than Sunak. The format was pretty crap overall though. Quickfire questions are nonsense.

I really don’t understand how anyone can have watched that and thought Starmer answered anything in more detail.

whoever said their husband said it’s shit you know vs shit you don’t is spot on. I have no idea what Starmer stands for or plans or how he will implement.

DontBiteTheCat · 04/06/2024 22:19

Anxiousheartbeat · 04/06/2024 22:16

This isn’t a plan at all. A plan has implementation details for a huge fucking rollout that this would be. This is just saying “money will be gotten”. No mention of cost to state of pupil influx either it’s just nonsense

….it tells you how the money “will be gotten” 😂

Influx? Many, many parents will absorb the rise without even feeling it, do you think the likes of the super rich will balk at a 4 grand rise? Yes some children will be affected, but don’t pretend it will be huge numbers because it really won’t.

Pains me to say it, but I don't think Starmer came across that well. He struggled to get to the point at times and, sadly, it did show him up as being unable to fully explain Labour's plan. I think that was partly down to the 45-second answer format. These were really important questions the public needed to hear the answers to and they couldn't even get a full minute?!

But my god, Sunak is a tetchy little twat.

It would have helped if Sunak hadn't incessantly talked over Starmer.

I think words were had during the break. A couple of times in the second half Sunak was clearly struggling to not interrupt Starmer.

For those not watching the TRIP analysis, Rory Stewart rightly pointed out that people watch these debates with their own prejudices- if you’re already going to vote Labour then you will see it as a win for Starmer and vice versa.

I agree. I'm definitely more biased toward Starmer (and bitterly disappointed)

LumiB · 04/06/2024 22:17

But they must of known the format and sunak was just direct in answering. No reason why starmer couldn't of done the same if he actually had a plan to be direct about

Agree, but he's naturally more of an orator than a shouter and that's why it went against him. The barrister in him likes going round the houses to make certain points and while it works sometimes, it didn't tonight.

BIossomtoes · 04/06/2024 22:13

You watched a different debate to me.

Definitely.

2 is in place without loopholes?

I think we've had an invasion of unhinged Tory bots tbh. Sunak was dire.

It’s so lazy and pathetic to assume someone having a different opinion to you is a “bot”

I'm a Labour voter and I'm disappointed too. I thought Sunak edged him.

KS = capable Dad vibes

Indeed. Sensible and paternal.

Devoid of ideas and duplicitous is hardly what I looked for in a father figure. You must have had a tough old childhood.

Yes - something was definitely said. Fucking ridiculous. Toddlers have better grasp of turn taking than Sunak.

Well I’ve always been a left wing voter, I’d never vote Tory, but I thought Starmer was dire. Too much empty waffle and putting the boot into the Tories without saying anything much about his own plan.

I want to know his vision for the future and his plan to get there and I really didn’t hear that.

Totally uninspiring.

SleepQuest33 · 04/06/2024 22:22

Starmer for me came across as the person with proper experience able to make challenging decisions. He can build a good team around him. He will slowly but surely execute his plans rather than coming out with short cut gimmicks just before the election.

I really hope he’s our next PM

Wewereonnabreak · 04/06/2024 22:22

Theweepywillow · 04/06/2024 22:12

I’m quite shocked at that, starmer was unable to answer any questions, literally. I thought he would have at least had some plan, but he just looked panicked and avoided the questions.

he was totally out of his depth, it’s bloody terrifying, can you imagine he actually got in, him and raynor, it doesn’t bear thinking about.

I thought it would be more evenly matched, but sunak wiped the floor with him, I can understand why he doesn’t want to debate sunak.

Absolutely. Rayner would be a better leader of the LP. Starmer is truly awful. Embarrassing really.

Anxiousheartbeat · 04/06/2024 22:22

DontBiteTheCat · 04/06/2024 22:17

The question was “how would you deal with issues, bold decisions or play it safe”.

Starker answered that he would consider the best course of action for issues on an individual basis.

Your response makes no sense?

Sorry I thought you were referring to all the questions asked.

the football one he was given either or and sort of fudged it

BIossomtoes · 04/06/2024 22:22

We all saw starmer get outclassed

We certainly saw him shouted down.

LittleLlama · 04/06/2024 22:23

YouGov snap poll suggests Sunak 'won' debate, beating Stamer 51% to 49%

sandorschicken · 04/06/2024 22:23

uniquestionss · 04/06/2024 22:12

Starmer should have reminded everyone about all the parties during covid

Why? What will that do for the future?
