How do you vote? (Tactically etc)

How do you tend to vote?

I tend to vote tactically to keep the local Tory out (although it's a Tory stronghold so hasn't worked, yet).

This year there's an independent candidate I'd love to vote for, but realistically they won't win and I don't want the Tory's back in. Argghhhh. Now I'm torn on what to do.

How do you vote?

I put an X in the box next to the name of the person I wish to vote for.

Rockfordpeach · 27/05/2024 12:26

I have the exact same problem, OP. Tory stronghold, should vote lib dem to try and oust the Tory mp but there is an independent standing who I really like and who has done a lot for the area as a local councillor. I'm really conflicted. I wonder if it's the same area?

BigBoysDontCry · 27/05/2024 12:30

In an ideal world, I'd look at the candidate and lick the one I felt best aligned to my values and felt like they'd work hard to represent the community they would be elected to serve.

In the real world I vote tactically to get rid of the lazy arsehole SNP gobshite we have.

I hate voting in this negative way but needs must.

BigBoysDontCry · 27/05/2024 12:31

Pick, not lick, this isn't a baby reindeer situation.... 😂

NotTooOldPaul · 27/05/2024 12:35

It is easy for me as the only candidates with any chance are Labour and SNP so I can vote for either and there is no chance of a Tory winning.
I do like the idea of a better voting system such as simgle transferable vote.

Ours is new but I like what they're standing for

I vote for the party I feel is best.

Jessie21 · 27/05/2024 12:45

I will be voting tactically this election to make sure the tories are turfed out.

I'll vote tactically to remove my incumbent MP who doesn't take their seat in the Commons and doesn't vote.🙄

5byfive · 27/05/2024 12:51

I used to spoil my vote but I’ve since realised that this just increases turnout making the winner look more legitimate I won’t bother voting at all in future.

I would love to have an independent whose views aligned with mine to vote for.

Thanks. We don't usually have much choice vote wise, Tory, Labour or Lib Dem, I often use the website that tells us who to vote for tactically to get the Tory out. However this year there's a Tory (presuming someone stands, ours just defected to Labour!), Labour, green, 2 x independents, Lib Dem, and a social Democratic Party candidate. If the non Tory votes get split across all of them we could well see a Tory winning again.

OP posts:
FloofyBird · 27/05/2024 12:53

Although just to add I have no idea what the social Democratic Party stand for or if they'd take any Tory rather than others votes. Must research!

noblegiraffe · 27/05/2024 12:56

If it's the MP who literally just defected to Labour, Labour are predicted to win that seat pretty comfortably.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/05/2024 12:59

Ii vote Labour. I’m a member. I just can’t bring myself to vote tactically. I thought long and hard About voting Lib Dem in 2010 to try (in vain) to get the sitting Tory out. I didn’t in the end and I’m glad I didn’t because they jumped into bed with the Tories to form a government. I wanted no part in that even though my vote wouldn’t have counted for much anyway. It would have been on my conscience - and yes, I know how ridiculous that sounds.

BIossomtoes · 27/05/2024 13:01

There’s no way a general election vote should be based on local issues, that’s what councillors are for. I’ve always voted Labour, it’s looking as if my vote might actually count in this Tory stronghold this time.

FloofyBird · 27/05/2024 13:01

@noblegiraffe Dan Pouktlter, he defected a couple of weeks ago (possibly more time flies!)

Not at all. One of my dc is voting for the first time this year and is choosing not to vote tactically as they want a clear conscience.

I live in a Tory stronghold which means that in almost 50 years, I have never once had the MP I voted for.
As always, I shall vote tactically and hope that this year my vote will go to the successful candidate.

Seaitoverthere · 27/05/2024 13:06

I have always voted tactically towards what I would like the national end result to be and always will whilst we have our current electoral system unless something comes up for some reason.

Hedgerow2 · 27/05/2024 13:07

Labour - all my life. Apart from when Corbyn was leader and then I just didn't vote.

Same. At one point in the early 90s I moved from the safest Tory seat to the second safest. If I actually get what I voted for this time I’ll be beside myself with joy.

noblegiraffe · 27/05/2024 13:08

Things are looking like there could be a Labour win there, despite the 20,000 majority in 2019 it's certainly not a Tory stronghold anymore.

Tactically Liberal to get the useless Tory out.
