How do you vote? (Tactically etc)

How do you tend to vote?

I tend to vote tactically to keep the local Tory out (although it's a Tory stronghold so hasn't worked, yet).

This year there's an independent candidate I'd love to vote for, but realistically they won't win and I don't want the Tory's back in. Argghhhh. Now I'm torn on what to do.

How do you vote?

If I vote (haven't decided), I think I'll vote for the best individual in my constituency (who is a Tory!)
My thinking is that if everyone votes for a candidate of good character, regardless of party, we might have a parliament with fewer charlatans who can work together to get stuff done.
Well, that'd be nice lol.

noblegiraffe · 27/05/2024 14:20

I'd be surprised if there are any Tory candidates "of good character" left. Haven't they all stood down or crossed the floor?
Why would someone of good character be campaigning for that binfire?

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 27/05/2024 14:34

I have always voted for the party that aligned with my views best. This year I will be voting for whoever has the strongest chance of beating the conservatives in my area. They need to be gone.

Survivingmy3yearold · 27/05/2024 20:43

Mine will be a tactical Lib Dem vote. They're the second largest party here after Tories and out MP is just bloody awful! Lives in a bit country pad in one of the local villages and turns up for photo shoots but not much else. His voting record is appalling!

Neversaygoodbye · 28/05/2024 08:06

I'm in a new constituency, having previously been a tory stronghold I'm very hopeful this will now change but not sure who to vote out of labour and lib dem to give it the best chance. Will be watching things closely and joined Carol Vorderman's campaign for tactical voting.

ClonedSquare · 28/05/2024 08:14

Luckily my tactical vote is the same as who I'd like to vote for. Unfortunately we're in a staunch Tory area with a well-known name for an MP so I doubt she'll be kicked out.

Under proportional representation, I'd 100% vote for the independent in your shoes. Unfortunately under our current system, I think the only logical thing to do is vote tactically.

I'm not a fan of left-leaning Independent candidates in general though. I feel they're putting self interest and ego above what's optimal for the country as a whole (not splitting the non-Tory vote).

WindyRainySunny · 28/05/2024 08:29

Lol at anyone "voting for the candidate I like best". Half the time that will be a wasted vote in our awful first past the post voting system. You have to play the system if you want to make a difference to the outcome!

modgepodge · 28/05/2024 08:41

Tactically. And it worked last time, a previous fairly safe Tory seat went to Labour despite the opposite happening nationally! First time in any election or referendum that what I voted for actually happened 😂

Churchview · 28/05/2024 09:03

Tactically for whoever is most likely to get the Tories out.
For the first time in years I'm in an area where this means Labour, they are in with a chance here and I couldn't be happier.

IrishMammy4evr · 03/06/2024 15:36

I have always voted Tory after voting labour when I first qualified as a nurse in the 90s and seen them 1st hand run the nhs into the ground. Now never voting Tory again after the Home Secretary used his position to get his son off when he landed my son in hospital with a fractured skull in 3 places

frankentall · 03/06/2024 15:47

I've tried to vote tactically but it doesn't always work - most of the opposition to the Tory in our seat is historically split 50/50 between Lib dem and Labour so due to our shitty system my vote doesn't count for anything anyway, but it is alos hard to work out which if the two would be the most useful anti-Tory vote.

willowtolive · 04/06/2024 08:44

North Cornwall so I have to vote Lib Dem tactically, we actually have a new young local candidate and I like what he stands for so not too much nose holding this time.

bombastix · 04/06/2024 08:47

My seat is currently Conservative but predicted to go Labour. I will go with the grain to get the local MP out (okay MP, but he’s a Conservative who have overall done an appalling job).

KohlaParasaurus · 04/06/2024 08:52

Always Labour until the current election. This time I will be voting for the local candidate with a track record on an issue that's a priority for me rather than the spivvy nepo baby.

Lonelycrab · 04/06/2024 08:55

Tactically, LD in my case although I’m in one of the safest Tory seats in the country so I may as well not bother. I will of course though.

noblegiraffe · 04/06/2024 08:58

There are very very few safe Tory seats anymore, particularly now Farage is running Reform.

You worked in the NHS during its golden age and thought it was run into the ground? Blimey, what do you think’s happened to it in the last 14 years?

Parky04 · 04/06/2024 09:24

I had a great discussion with our independent candidate yesterday. I will vote for him as he clearly cares about the area. He obviously won't win, but hopefully, he will get his deposit back.

SnapdragonToadflax · 04/06/2024 09:46

I'm voting tactically this time. I want Labour to win the election but my area is strongly Tory (15,000 majority) with Lib Dems in second, so I'll hold my nose and vote for them. The Lib Dem candidate is really good locally, whereas the Labour one was only selected a few weeks ago and I haven't seen any campaign literature.

Fingers firmly crossed. My worry is that lots of people who normally vote Tory but can't vote for the current shitshow will vote Labour because they want a Labour government, splitting the left of centre vote. I find myself in the uncomfortable position of hoping that Reform take the Tory votes. Ugh.

Beefandwine · 04/06/2024 09:49

In a Tory stronghold. I shall be voting for Reform

itsallfuntilsomeonelosesaneye · 04/06/2024 10:31

Usually the party I agree with the most. I've never been in a seat where tactical consideration was needed - either a marginal where the second place was the aprty I wanted, or a safe blue seat where it really didn't make a difference. That safe blue is expected to flip this time, so I'll be casting my vote with pleasure.

The only way I'd vote blue would be in a Tory/Reform marginal

ShrinkingEveryDay · 04/06/2024 10:37

I always vote tactically against the Tories. I’d love a PR system so I can vote for the party I want to vote for but FPTP makes that impossible 🤬

What??? The NHS wasn’t run into the ground under Labour 🙄

That was @BIossomtoes

I know. I quoted the post that said it was and said it was wrong. Did you maybe tag the wrong poster?
