General election 2024

Rishi wants to lose the election

With this new plan for introducing National Service, looking at raiding funds that are for levelling up in the North, and previously saying he wouldn't want to be a war time PM. Could it be he thinks we may be dragged into something in the upcoming years, and wants out before he has to look cowardly, so is doing what he can to purposefully lose the election?
The sceptic in me says it makes no sense to come up with such a contentious and unpopular proposal this close to an election.

Ha ha ha - you've just given me the glorious vision of Rishi cos-playing Zelensky! It's almost worth them winning and worth war breaking out to see that! 😂
Almost. Not quite.

TooBigForMyBoots · 26/05/2024 14:13

He definitely wants out and by the look of it wants to rid the country of the Tories.

Are we sure he's not a sleeper agent for Labour?🤔

Demonhunter · 26/05/2024 14:21

@heldinadream what a vision 😂

@TooBigForMyBoots that would be a fair assumption, in light of the current bizarre behaviour. I do think he must have very real concerns that something big is about to hit, in regards to military activity and is jumping now.

This is nothing to do with war. Nigel Farage had it right when he said that Rishi had sat down with a group of Reform voters and asked them what policies they would like to see.

This National Service policy is purely a desperate attempt to stop haemorrhaging voters to Reform.

The Ministry of Defence said only 3 days ago that there were no plans to reintroduce national service. They clearly weren't consulted. https://x.com/tomhourigan/status/1794712220611613168?s=61&t=U9XrcF693-JpMxeIueYG7g

He's not trying to lose the election, he is trying to win it. But he is really bad at it.

Remember he lost to Liz Truss in the leadership election.

noblegiraffe · 26/05/2024 15:55

And just to underline what I just said, Rishi has just done a TikTok 🤦‍♀️

https://x.com/politlcsuk/status/1794731818719347085?s=61&t=U9XrcF693-JpMxeIueYG7g

He is trying.

noblegiraffe · 26/05/2024 16:00

His comms team hate him.

Rishi wants to lose the election
TheWhalrus · 26/05/2024 16:04

Re-introducing National Service might be popular with the members and other far-right nutjobs (these were the people who thought Liz Truss was a good idea), but it doesn't feel like a centrist policy that could win an election; if it was, wouldn't someone like Boris have tried it already? This feels like an attempt to stem the flow of right-wing nationalists to Reform....essentially a damage limitation exercise.

Starlightstarbright3 · 26/05/2024 16:13

Delivering prescriptions and food … sure supermarkets and chemists who already offer this as a service will love they have volunteers doing it for free over the weekends.🙄

SonicTheHodgeheg · 26/05/2024 16:15

Somebody at Conservative HQ has spent too much time reading the comments section on social media. “Bring back National Service/corporal punishment/hanging…” is the sort of comment that does appear and they want those people to vote Conservative rather than Reform.

DeclineandFall · 26/05/2024 16:24

He's stirring things up so that some people will panic and think its safer to stick to what they know over what they don't. You can see people on here already worried.
Its bollocks and it's totally irresponsible but then that's unsurprising given how they've acted especially over the last 4 years. They are not going to win a fair fight so they will try every desperate trick in the book.

EatCrow · 26/05/2024 16:28

It’s not about Rishis personal feelings, it’s the whole stupid pretend divide. Labour will get in, there is no doubt; this nonsense just makes people believe they actually have a say/a choice.

And what will change? Nothing much. Just a few tiny details.

Both wings of the same bird.

the80sweregreat · 26/05/2024 16:33

I must admit that the PM's tic tok video promoting this volunteering / national service new idea was about the happiest I've heard him in ages.
Going out delivering drugs to old people .. what could possibly go wrong there? .
If nothing else it's a distraction from all the actual problems people face daily, which is probably why they are saying anything they think might be a ' vote winner'.

BIossomtoes · 26/05/2024 16:35

He’s really had enough, hasn’t he? He wants to win this election like he wants to give his fortune to the homeless.

Yep-my DC works in a chemist at the weekend and does a lot of delivering prescriptions to elderly/infirm customers. For wages.

Does Rishi Sunak want them to do it unpaid?!

No really, this is Rish! campaigning with all he has got, he is showing us just how talented he is.

GreenSmithing · 26/05/2024 18:00

I genuinely think this is to distract us from the Conservatives track record since they've been in power. If everyone's frothing over this national service idea (which is never going to happen, to be clear, none of the armed services want conscripts nor have the staff to train them) no one is talking about the asset stripping of the countrybin the name of austerity; the failure of Brexit; the flouting of their own rules during lockdown; Trussonomics; the state of the NHS; the awarding of contracts to their cronies. I could go on...

This is just smoke and mirrors again. Judge them on what they've done, not an idea they are never going to implement.

What they have done since 2010 is give us the Big Society, and since it has been so hugely successful they are now extending to include 18-19 year olds who have hitherto been unable to access it.

VolvoFan · 26/05/2024 18:14

There is a rumour going around that Britain is officially at war with Russia and Sunak doesn't want to be a wartime PM. The other rumour is that his home in California is almost ready, so he's going to want to leave the country before the country gets run further into the ground by the opposition. Even that snake Michael Gove is standing down despite having a safe seat, he knows the writing's on the wall. The Tories are (deservedly) toast.

BIossomtoes · 26/05/2024 18:16

Gove’s seat isn’t safe. The orange wave is coming for it. And Redwood’s.

Edited

Gove's seat isn't as safe as all that. The neighbouring Council went red in the local elections.

romatheroamer · 26/05/2024 18:33

it was discussed quite seriously on the Maitlis podcast that he called the election now because quite simply he was sick of it all and just wanted to get it out of the way, not really bothered about the surprise and dismay of his MPs.

noblegiraffe · 26/05/2024 18:35

The Lib Dems are going to win Gove's seat.

Frostynight · 26/05/2024 18:41

It's a fairly desperate attempt to grab a few votes from Daily Mail reading potential Reform voters. He knows it's a stupid plan, and wouldn't have suggested it if he thought he might have to implement it.

Also, it's a great distraction from the real issues. Look how many threads were started on this today. Even my mum phoned me first thing asking me what I thought.

Finally, it's a great way of blaming everything that's gone wrong with the country on a few teens, rather than on the government who bled the country dry and stripped the youth of secure jobs, affordable rent and property and, quite frankly, a life.

Just ignore it, it's a load of nonsense.

Absolutely correct.

This announcement is about trying to stop retired Daily Mail readers voting for Reform. Nothing more, nothing less.

looking at raiding funds that are for levelling up in the North

Looking at? He's already done it, he's nicked capital funding which would have improved Manchester's railways in order to use it on routine road maintenance in London. And they boasted about it (yes, that blue poster is real and couldn't be any more blatant).

Incidentally if the Greater Manchester Combined Authority wanted to use capital funds for current expenditure, they'd find themselves overruled. The government can ignore the rules that councils must abide by
