I am trying to do a friends family tree and am stuck.
Frederick FINN -according to death cert was born in 1904, but according to marriage cert was born in 1906 (was 25 in 1931).On marriage cer, he states his fathers name as James Finn ,soldier deceased. I have found no birth records in 1904 or 1906 but have found a possible match on 1911 census, however fathers name frederick not james.
Which certificate is likely to be correct. I know that he lived in dover all his life so he should def be on 1911 census, also that his mother was irish which fits with 1911 entry that i have.

when you die - you arn't there to say when you were born someone else is...and they are the next of kin so likely to be upset and the details a blur.

I would take the death certificate with a pinch of salt and the marriage certificate with a lesser pinch - ages can vary on marriage certs, if there is to big a gap than the ages may vary (my grandmothers 1st dh knocked 10 years of his age and it wasn't until after she had registered his death that she found out) I also meet a man recently who had been searching for his mothers bith for years - he found that she had knowcked 8 years of her age to make her the same age as his father who never ever knew

If james/freerick died when james was very young - then perhaps he mistook the name?

what month did he marry in 1931? was it before October - cause if it was and his birthday was in October, November or December then he may have been born in 1905

he may have been frederick James and used Frederick as his every day name and James as his 'legal' name. I have relatives using all sorts of variations of their names and as everything else lines up I know it has to be them.

Age is questionable - no probs there - easy done to take a couple of years off their age or add to their age.
