Possible to trace grandfather if not listed on birth cert?

My family member was adopted shortly after birth and there is no father listed on her original birth certificate. Not sure how to start with this, any ideas? Thanks!

My DH is adopted but does know his birth mother and fathers names but he did an Ancestry DNA test just out of curiosity and was contacted by his half brother, although he never took it any further in the end as he wasn’t ready to.

Yes if he does a DNA test on ancestry, if any other members of her father's family do one you will get an unknown close match. It's anonymous unless you put up a public family tree and you can contact the person through ancestry with no commitment.

The way to do it is to get a DNA test done. Either with Ancestry or MyHeritage (I would recommend Ancestry).

From there, she will be able to identify people who are related to her.

If she then builds a family tree she will be able to identify those people who are related to her through her mother.

For people who are related to her and she cannot place them in her mother's family tree then that would suggest that these people are related to her through her father.

She will then need to build a family tree showing how the people related to her through her father are connected to each other.

Once she has done that it is possible to trace who the father likely was. Although it may not be possible to track it down to a single individual, for example it may be that she could track the father down to being one of two brothers for example.

An Ancestry test will tell you if you are related via the maternal or paternal line to your matches so that would be a start for your relative.
