I want to start tracing my family tree, including doing a DNA test, but I’m overwhelmed by the options for services! Would be very grateful for recommendations. I’m in the UK with English and Scottish heritage.

If you use the Ancestry DNA test you can upload the results to other sites. If you do another test you can't upload it to acenstry.

For records research, the official sites are Scotland's People for Scotland. GRO for England.

Family Search is free. Find My Past is not, but has one of the widest ranges of records - including being currently the only one with the 1921 census. I think Ancestry might be slightly better for military records. For these and similar trust the records only - not hints, and definitely not trees compiled by anyone else.

And FreeBMD. Won't get you the original records but does give free access to the indexes.

@peachgreen

Ancestry UK has a special offer on DNA tests at the moment.

That's the one I would suggest to most people.
