Please could someone recommend a Genealogist in the UK who’s undertaken research for them? I’d love to do this as a gift for my mum but a little reluctant as to whether you actually get a decent amount of information for the costs involved? Thank you!

I used All About Ancestors to do exactly the same for my mother's 80th birthday gift. She was fabulous; really understood what I did and did not want and lots of options so that I felt in control of the budget and the direction of research. She's a former BBC journalist so the report was really well written and it was just so interesting. It was way better than I could have done myself and with every penny IMO. She asked if I wanted to put photos in it of the family that I did know about so there's images of my mum as a baby in the report as well as her parents and grandparents. My mum loved it and shows it to everyone she knows!

She gave me a free consultation and then a free hour of research where she checked my mum's line actually went back and there were records available for it. Then I could have stopped without any charge at that point, but decided to carry on, signed the contract etc and that hour became the first of a ten hour block which she charged at £450 for the block. For that £450 I got a great report that got my mum's dad's (my grandfather's) line back to 1830. It had names, occupations, locations, maps, marriages etc and the WW1 records of my grandfather and all his ancestors back to 1830. It was really interesting. She gave me some recommendations at the end of that report: I could have stopped at that point but asked her to look at my mum's mum's side next. So the report I next got was doubled in length and included both my mum's parents' family trees back to about 1820/1830. It had more charts and pictures and maps. So that had cost me £900 by then.

She said one of the lines didn't look too promising to go any further back but the other one did, so I asked her to do one more block of ten hours and she got the line back to 1673. It was brilliant. So £1350 altogether; my sister went halves with me.

All my family have read it and we upgraded to a leather folder so the gift for my mum looked super smart and will last for years. Really pleased and highly recommended.

Her website is allaboutancestors.com/. She's on Facebook too. I know I sound like I work for them but I don't. :)

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Although I can't recommend a particular person, there's some really useful information here on how to find a professional genealogist and the costs:-

And one of the main professional bodies that lists professional genealogists is here:-
