Does anyone know where I can check if someone died without a will in USA? I know there is a list published in UK and wondering if there was an equivalent?

Thanks

Yes and no.

It's done on a state by state basis so you'd need to know where the deceased was living.

There are also "heir hunter" organisations operating in the US as there are here.

@KnittingNeedles thanks for your reply

This seems to be unclaimed savings or returns from businesses rather than those who died without a will.

We have been contacted by a uk heir hunter who say a case has been referred to them by their American office. I am trying to find where they found their information from. The person is on our family tree but I can't find any evidence of their death or if they died intestate.

I am going to call the heir hunters next week but wanted to check it out as much as I could beforehand.

It’s entirely possible that the US office has accessed info which isn’t digitised, again some states have deaths, marriages online, others don’t, others just have indexes. They may have gone into local records offices and found it that way. Or they may have got the wrong guy.

True. I'll call them and see what they will tell me
