1921 Census - Cost

Hi

I have in the past done some work on my family tree and have the 1911 Census for my four grandparents families. I thought I would try to obtain the 1921 Census records but have been shocked by the cost.

The National Archives refer you to the Find my Past website who are asking for a fee of £3.50 (£2.50 for a tranlation) per page or £199.99 for a years subscription.

I had planned to use Ancestry for most of my research (which also allows you to pay for just one month) and whilst it is showing the 1911 Census and 1939 Register it does not appear to have the 1921 Census.

Is it a case of just getting the 1921 Census on Find my Past (hopefully only 4 pages required) and then use Ancestry for everything else?

Thank you

Depends how patient you are however they do sometimes have special half price weekends for the 1921 usually around Bank Holidays.

@ArnoldBee thank you, I will check for offers.

Ancestry didn’t get the contract with NA to digitise and index the 1921 census - FMP did and they have exclusive rights to this for a set time period

Set time period unknown

Princessglittery The coronation weekend might be a good one to watch to see if they do an offer May 5.6,7

I was caught out by this too.

I’m just being very selective in the pages I view and doing the rest on ancestry.

I’ve been lucky that another user on ancestry shares a direct line with me, and has already downloaded many pages and uploaded them to her ancestry tree.

It’s definitely worth looking through other public trees to see what you can find

Some libraries are offering it for free within the library now. (They weren't when it was first released last spring)

Thank you all for your helpful responses.

Genealogy nerd here!

I've got the FMP sub with 1921 included, happy to do a lookup for you?

Agree with pp searching other people's trees can be very useful!

I was shocked at the price they were demanding, I'm used to subscribing to Ancestory for a month or two then cancelling so naively thought I'd be able to do the same with FMP :(

Raindancer411 · 31/01/2023 19:53

I was put off the price too :( I haven't even been able to afford ancestry this year

LIZS · 31/01/2023 19:57

Not sure the library fmp subscription covers 1921 census yet. We used it during lockdown but even then some access was limited. You can view it free at National Archives at Kew and I think a couple of other venues.

Ellmau · 04/02/2023 16:34

Library subscriptions do now include it.

Veescience · 17/02/2023 21:28

Remember you get FMP free (excluding census and newspapers) if you are in Scotland. You have to be a member of the National Library Scotland
