What's our relationship?

I'm chatting with someone on Ancestry.co.uk and we're struggling to work out our relationship. She's not done DNA test yet (I have).
She is the 3 x great granddaugther of the BROTHER of my 3 x great grandmother.
Anyone know exactly what that would make us?
Thanks :)

First cousins three times removed, I think.

if she is on Ancestry and part of your family tree if you click on her profile it will give you the relationship

watcherintherye · 23/05/2022 13:02

If you are both direct descendants of siblings, then I think you’re 5th cousins? The children of the siblings being cousins, the grandchildren being 2nd cousins, and so on.

Fleur405 · 23/05/2022 13:07

So your common ancestor is your 4x great grandparents? Is that right?

FadedRed · 23/05/2022 13:07

watcherintherye is correct - looking again I only counted one side of descent, not both. Ooops- basic error Blush

What @watcherintherye said.

Fleur405 · 23/05/2022 13:09

If so I agree you are 5th cousins. I think!

watcherintherye · 23/05/2022 13:15

I think the once, twice etc. removed is when you’re looking at a cross-generational relationships. So A and B are 1st cousins. Their children, (a) and (b) are 2nd cousins, but A and (b) and B and (a) are first cousins, once removed, and so on down the line.

I've written it all out in my pedantic way and @watcherintherye is correct with 5th cousinsSmile

watcherintherye · 23/05/2022 13:18

I just did the above to try and get it clear in my mind. It’s quite complicated, sometimes!

@buttercupmeadows I think that your relationship to the other person's great great grandmother is 1st cousins 4 times removed. (If you were interested Smile) @watcherintherye might be able to confirm that.

Thats what I would say too, for the relationship with the 2x GG! Just for the record, would the op’s relationship with the other person’s 3x GG be 4x Great Niece (or Nephew!) or have I gone wrong?

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 23/05/2022 14:17

Yes I agree @watcherintherye. Although if we were consistent with terms, it would be 3 times but we don't tend to use 'grand niece' or 'grand nephew' we just go straight in for 'great'.
