Looking for info to order death cert - what am I missing?!

I'm trying to order a death certificate in order to get a copy of my grandfather's military records.

I've checked FreeBMD but am struggling to find any record of his death. He died in 1983, would this have any bearing on it?

I don't think FreeBMD goes up to 1983. You can sign up to a free trial for FindMyPast and I think it will be on there. Basically you sign up, then immediately cancel the subscription, but it will still give you the two weeks' free trial.

If you know his date of death and the approximate location, then you could get in touch with the register office for that area and ask them direct.

GRO online only offer death indexes as follows:

"death records from 1837 to 1957, and 1984 to current year"
