I'm quite new to all this but think I am doing OK using family stuff and Findmypast subscription but I have got to 1700 and hit a wall. Looking for a Scottish relative and cannot find any details of his birth at all. I've also tried Scotlands People website but same result. Has anyone got any ideas?

Are you using the search function on findmypast or manually going through the baptism records? There may have been a transcription error.

The further back you go, the fewer records there are. Some never existed in the first place. Some have been destroyed over the years. Pre 1855 in Scotland there was no civil registration of birth death and marriage, pre 1841 there was no census.

To be honest, getting to 1700 is pretty good.

That is good, 1700 that will be from Church marriage and baptism records. Well done. We are at similar date in England and stalled.
Any military employment involved? Some Regiments still have records.
Any Clans involved? Musters or gatherings?
What was happening in Scotland? The Stuarts building up for the 1715 strife with England.

When were Covenanters? Sorry I'm getting into this, bit of an enthusiast.
