This site has been invaluable in helping me trace my maternal grandfather's line. It was rumoured that he was an orphan. Thanks to this site I was able to get a copy of his birth record, find his parents and last night I was able to find his parents death dates. Of course, now I need to find what happened to him but it is so exciting!

Scotland's People is great, it's the only way to see BMD info for scotland and you get to see the whole certificate too, not just a transcription. Quite expensive though, and the search function could be better, especially if you are looking up a common name - John McDonald born in Glasgow around 1920 - you'd get loads of results and no way to refine them.

Oh yes. You do have to contend with lots of people with the same name. I believe if you travel up to Edinburgh for £15 you can access the records for a whole day. Which is good value for money. But alas, distance means for now I am buying credits for info I am certain is the correct one.
