Is it me, or are they all a little bit bonkers?

We're mostly happily bonkers Grin

“We” in what way?

We're generally pretty knowledgeable and [more than] a little bit obsessive.

I think they are, er, quite “tightly moderated” shall we say?

The thing is with any facebook group - anyone can join. You don't need to know anything about genealogy. There are some very knowledgeable people who can give seriously good pointers and suggest avenues you wouldn't have known about, there are other posters who have no clue and won't take kindly to having it pointed out their their research is poor and that they can't jump to the conclusions they haver reached.

One thing that I have noticed that baffles me is the closing of comments abruptly. Just because the admins have seen a certain question or observation three times before, doesn't mean others might not enjoy discussing it for the first time. Can you imagine if Mumsnet closed down comments because "we've had this discussion before".
