Where to get copies of certificates from?

Off work for a week so as we can't go anywhere I've spent some time researching my family history.
I could do with getting a couple of marriage certificates but I'm a bit lost where is best to order them from.
Ancestry seems to be expensive so I found the gov.uk website. But I cannot for the life of me get logged on. It's telling me I have an account but then says it's emailing me a verification code. But I'm never getting the code. Not in junk and I've added email address to my contacts but it's not coming through.
Where do you all get your copies from, please?

I get mine from the .gov site although they are taking ages at the moment, due to covid. I'm still waiting for one ordered 1st Feb.

I use the gov.uk site too. I didn't know you could get them from anywhere else tbh.

Is the problem that you've previously set up an account but it won't let you log on? Or is it that it won't let you set up an account in the first place? If it's the first, then I'd set up a new account with a different email address. If the latter, I expect the site's just having a funny five minutes. If it doesn't go back to normal soon, I'd try clearing your cookies and starting again.

What do Ancestry charge, out of curiosity?

Thanks.
They are £25 on ancestry.
I've tried logging in with current account and it says it is sending a verification code which I never get.
Also set up new account with different email and it's doing the same.
I'll leave it a few days and try again.

If they are for England than you can get them from the GRO which is the gov. website. Alternatively, from the actual register office itself.

That's so weird. Hope you fix it. £25 is outrageous. On the GRO website they're £11 for paper copies and £7 for PDFs if memory serves. But not everything is available as a PDF.

I need to apply for a foreign death certificate at some point and have to email to find out how much it will be. I read somewhere they're usually £50, which is making me feel a bit faint.

The gov.uk site is the best. Second choice the individual register offices but they usually cost a bit more.

Never use any third party site for certifates, they just add loads on top.

Agree with what everyone else says - go direct to the GRO rather than using a commercial site. The exception to this is Scotland's People for Scottish records which looks like a commercial site (and charges for searches and to view records) but when you click through to buy the certificate you just pay the standard price. Ordered one through them recently and it was £12 for the certificate.
