Hi. My ancestor John Riley was a tailor. He/ or another John Riley is listed here as a cutter, I think. Would cutter have been a tailoring occupation.
Also, can anyone read the name of the 2nd marriage witness?

Brightwell for both of the witnesses.
Yes a cutter is a specialist role, cutting the fabric efficiently and correctly for the tailor.

Thanks PMBBD!
Could I ask another question? In Ireland, 200 years ago, might there have been 2 children within the same family with the same forename for any reason?
Thanks

Hi op - that was common in Scotland if one died, they just reused the name.

Davespecifico · 29/11/2020 16:35

Any reason why they might use same if both alive?

Yes, I agree that Cutter is an occupation within the tailoring trade.
Actually, my mother was a Cutter, she worked in the upholstery trade. It's an extremely skilled job, as a skilful cutter will utilise the fabric advantageously and economically, leaving the minimum of waste fabric.

I have never come across the name being used for multiple living children in my own research but other people have suggested it happens. I would imagine that a lot of Catholic families used a religious name more than once but the child was known by another name.

My gran had 2 brothers called John. One was actually her cousin who lived with them as he was orphaned

Agree on the cutter - that's still used in the industry, it's the person who places the pattern on the fabric then cuts all the pieces out for someone else to sew together.

Not come across two siblings with the same name but it's always possible. Could one be known by their middle name?

There were two sisters, both living, in my family, who were called Eliza and Elizabeth.
