How long does someone have to be have dead before before if shows up on any kind of search ?

It is not been announced in the local paper, there is no one to ask, it is thought they are dead but seeing it in black and white, albeit on a screen, would really help.

TIA.

If you need a death record from ancestry it can take at least ten years. Anyone can order a death certificate once the death has been registered tho

SunshineCake · 28/07/2020 14:04

Is it possible to read it on line first or would I have to order a hard copy? Is there a specific site for that?

Thank you.

Check on FreeBMD. Having said that, I don't know how recent they go up to? Or the GRO. But, yes, you'd have to order one to see the details unless someone has posted a copy on Ancestry.

SunshineCake · 28/07/2020 14:11

I will look, thank you. I'm assuming FreeBMD and Ancestry are completely different in their service?

FreeBMD is, well, free but you have to sign up to Ancestry.

Ancestry has England and Wales Death Index 1989-2019

I've just looked up my uncommon surname in it (uncommon as in there were 24 entries, including the 7 for the variation) and discovered the death of the wife of a second cousin twice removed which happened last April.

I don't know about free access places - FreeBMD only goes up to 1992.

I could check the index if you PM me brief details?

SunshineCake · 28/07/2020 14:25

Oh I'm sorry, merryhouse that my question has lead you to find a death in your own family. Condolences.

I don't want to sign up for Ancestry as I have a relative I can't have find me so is it possible to do a made up name without messing things up for others?

A help would be much appreciated if you are sure?

merryhouse my mothers death in 2015 is not listed on Ancestry for some reason

HappyHammy · 28/07/2020 14:30

Do you know whereabouts they lived, date of birth, place of birth. . Can you try and search through the Gov.UK death records if you have any information about them.

SunshineCake · 28/07/2020 14:31

I thought Ancestry was for people doing their family trees and due to that only people who have details entered about them are on there.

SunshineCake · 28/07/2020 14:31

HappyHammy, I know where they lived but only a rough guess at DOB.

@SunshineCake I'm a member of Ancestry if you want to PM details for me to search this evening? (I'm off out shortly but could look after dinner)

SunshineCake · 28/07/2020 14:34

Thank you very much, EggyMom.

SunshineCake · 28/07/2020 14:36

GRO is showing up to 2019 if that's any use. www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

SunshineCake · 28/07/2020 14:49

Date wise that should cover it, SwedishEdith, thank you. I will try now.
