DNA testing which one?

So my I can trace my dad's paternal family back to his grandfather born around 1867. I'm then a bit stuck. I've a dad for that grandfather but the records aren't perfect.

Would a DNA test help? If so which one?

Part of my problem is that the surname is very very common. That's why the records aren't that helpful.

Ancestry.com has a massive database, you can use your matches and their family trees to see if you’re on the right track - they also have DNA circles which are groups of people descended from a common ancestor.
