Ancestry DNA

I have been considering doing the Ancestry DNA test but unsure if it is worth Â£99.
Anybody done this and have found family members or information you didn't already know through this?

A relative of mine had this done. The highest % of DNA was as we expected but it did show a very small % of 2 other far flung locations that we didn't know we had any connection to. It's sort of interesting but none of us are planning to trace our family history so not useful in any way.

I'd be tempted to pay this for FIL to prove he has Neanderthal blood. Does it go back that far?

I've been thinking about doing this I expect to find out I'm not as mixed race as I've been lead to believe.

I'm really curious but I thought for DNA to show ancestry it had to be a make sample?

Thanks for replies. I'm led to believe that anyone can be tested and have read someone who tested her mother because she was adopted and got 2 very strong matches in her family tree- think they turned out were her first cousins.
I know I have a big family but my parents memory isn't the best.
I think I'll go for it!

I'm also very interested to hear how you get on - my tree on Ancestry goes back to early 1700s; does their DNA offer links to other people's trees?

It is interesting. The software does attempt to match other trees and I have one confirmed match.

You can also download the raw DNA data and upload it to Gedmatch for other matches. I've had two matches from that.
