Family tree software

I was wondering which to use - I've had Family Tree Maker for a long time, but it is now well out-of-date and on a really old pc. The data is probably incompatible with new packages so I am going to start again from scratch and input the whole lot again. I'd also prefer one that doesn't automatically share all your data online. I've had someone pinch my research before and stick it in their online tree (what was worse was that they'd picked the wrong information and my tree wasn't theirs at all - I'd already checked and ruled a connection out).

Recommendations please!

As long as the software can output a gedcom then any new software should import it. If you don't want to share automatically then Gramps should fit the bill and its free.

I've decided not to import the data, I think the program I had is probably too old to be workable anyway. Most of my records were accidentally deleted by a friend of DH's who was reorgranising all the files on the hard drive (Grrr) and I'd only got around to re-inputting some of it.

Haven't really done any research for several years now, and so what I'd like is a new package, preferably one with good reporting layouts, but I don't need one with bells and whistles, or which shares data. Also my new pc doesn't have a disk drive, so I need one to buy that you can download.

I really like Legacy, they have a free trial version (it's not time limited or anything), have used it since around 2003 and really rate it!
