Finding out when someone left prison

Have stumbled upon an interesting relative who went to prison for throwing her child into a canal in 1933 and I know she went to prison and was sentenced to hang, I also know she got a reprieve and was sentenced to penal servitude for life. I also know in 1984 she attended my grandads funeral with her children.

I need to know when she left prison so that I can trace her marriage and (possible) death so that I can access the archives of her time in a Roman Catholic Home.

Any ideas?

I found this website which may be of use?

If you don't have a subscription to Ancestry or Find My Past, I'd be happy to do a search by name for you. Definitely an interesting story to research!

Esmee - thank you. I have only genesreunited which it seems may have been a misguided choice.

The name is Elizabeth Humphreys and she was sentenced in 1933 and some of the correspondence refers to her as Mary Elizabeth Humphreys and Elizabeth Mary Humphreys as well as Humphries.

Much appreciated.

Do you know what area or city she was in? Am just thinking there might be a newspaper record.

Did you have this info?

  1. Illegitimate child drowned in canal at Abbey Hulton on Feb 13 1933 by its mother Elizabeth Humphreys, aged 18 (SA March 18 p7 col 3)

I found it here

That gives her age to go on as well now.

I'm not sure how to go about finding out when she left prison, but if you know who she married and/or names of the children they had, I might be able to get a brief idea for you.

Oh I have the newspaper arcticle you have linked and I know she was in HMP in Liverpool and lived in Manchester after. It is just finding out when she left prison which is causing me aproblem - I have a variety of marriages around the Liverpool and Manchester area (her last known residence) but I cant rule any out because I dont know her marrie dname or when she left prison. She had a child called Tom someone thought so I can go through the birth records for a Tom born to a Hump maiden name but a very long shot - although I have abotu 5-6 possible surnames for the child.

Ah I see. If only she had a slightly less common name, it might be easier to narrow it down. I suppose if you have a few possible 'Toms' you could then look for marriages for Humphreys and that surname a year or so either side of his birth. Let me know if I can help any further!
