Anything except an iPhone is a good idea, iPhones are for sheep.

Stand out from the crowd with a phone thats actually good and does things you actually want rather then a fashion statement with pointless apps you don't need.

Love my iPhone, everyone should have one obv they should also be cheaper than they are!

Ryoko · 10/07/2010 13:32

No way should everyone have one, they have an image you know and it's not a good one, lets see how should I put it delicately.

iphones are for people viewed as fashion chasing, technologically ignorant and have too much money.

it's like the 00's version of a filofax.

The fact mumsnet is full of people with them is a compounding of the stereotype. I'm not insulting anyone here, I'm just saying people here don't know that Playstation is one word, don't know the first thing about Laptops etc and thats kind of what the majority view of mothers is anyway if you see what I mean.

Bobbalina · 10/07/2010 17:04

Tbh I just think my phone is great, I don't have any image in particular, the reason I have one is not about fashion, its because I like the phone!

OK some people might think they are show offable but I don't show mine off, I just enjoy using it because it is so simple to use and you can do so much useful and fun stuff with it.

There are so very many people who have them now, all kinds of folk, so I think that your stereotype is outdated already, or perhaps now limted to people with version 4?

If you want to judge me as being fashion chasing, that would be plain wrong, technologically ignorant, that would be correct ( but who wants to be a geek?), having too much money, well surely everyone gets to chose how they spend it and its not as though I haven't worked for it! Judge On by all means, but the issue with iphones is yours and not mine!

Thanks for the replies.

TBH I've spent so much time reading reviews I've managed to get quite confused about what is actually best - they all end up looking a bit the same and I end up switching between thinking - android funtionality seems good and a bit different so get that versus thinking iphone is easy to use, powerful and attractive so get that (but iphone4 plagued with problems .. but them will some kind of firmware update sort that out).

Has anyone actually used both an iphone and a good android phone to detect the real differences? And is there a cheaper phone that you can MN on that is just as good? (and then I can spend rest on an ipad? )

tbh I think you would be happy with either the desire/samsung/iphone (even tho I find the samsung just a touch large), for what the ordinary everyday person in the street uses them for there is little difference. After doing some research I am plumping for a Desire over an iphone because
a) I think it looks better, the new 4 actually looks like an older design.
b) I like the flash technology.
c) all apps I would actually use I can get for andriod anyway.
d) it's cheaper

The plus in the iphone 4 favour is apparently the battery is muchly improved and of course most people are more familar with the itunes/iphone interface.

"Anything except an iPhone is a good idea, iPhones are for sheep."

"iphones are for people viewed as fashion chasing, technologically ignorant and have too much money."

Blind hatred or blind devotion of any technical platform is the thing that's for sheep.

Deliberately not buying one because you think you're making some kind of statement is as ridiculous as buying one for the same reason.

I work in a very technical field with people who are about as far from "technologically ignorant" as you can get and yet I'm surrounded by people who have a variety of phones, including the iPhone.

Anyone that tries to pretend that there is just one answer, that one side has flaws that anyone proficient should be able to see and that anyone who follows another path is a sheep while they themselves spout the lines of other sheep like haters is someone that you just shouldn't listen to.

Do I own an iPhone? Actually I don't, but that's for all sorts of reasons rather than just because of who makes them.

ApplesinmyPocket · 11/07/2010 10:40

I don't know anything about iphones or the Galaxy but after reading an MN topic I bought the HTC Desire and I really love it. It's just so... clever, and does everything so damned well. But I've no idea how it compares, really - MN spoke well of it the reviews looked good (never seen a bad one of the Desire) and it seemed a good safe bet.

Ryoko · 12/07/2010 17:30

Yeah well a lot of people have iPhones because they have a contract that lets them have any phone and iPhones are the most expensive on the list so they may as well have it.

but a lot of people are sheep jumping on a bandwagon, trying to convince themselves they want one because of apps they never would have used otherwise, or viewed as geeky things if the hype wasn't there for the device.

PantsMacabre · 12/07/2010 17:34

I have a Samsung Galaxy Spica and it's fab. But then i have no iphone to compare it against. It's easy to use and i've downloaded loads of free apps including satnav and BBC headlines.

I use google chat on it alot as well as all the usual stuff and becasue it is google compatable i didn't have to put all my numbers and addresses into it - it picked them up from my google account. THe map on it is useful too if you're walking round town and need to find something.

PantsMacabre · 12/07/2010 17:35

I use it like another arm alot!

Macforme · 18/07/2010 22:17

Baaaaa Baaaaa, iphone user here. Must make me a sheep?! Or maybe it's because as someone whose hobby requires a Mac for editing, who has been using Apples for years because for the computing needs I have they WORK better... maybe I decided to have an iphone because it works seamlessly with the products I already use?

I'm neither rich (I wish) not technologically ignorant (thanks for that assumption but actually no) and the thought of being a fashion chaser is beyond laughable!

I'm led to assume then that those who chose other brands are somehow more technologically competent??? Kinda smacks of inverse snobbery to me...
