Help , what's happened? - my brand new lap top has stopped being able to connect to internet unless in same room ,or room directly above ,router .
Router couple of months old .
Has been perfectly fine ,working all over our large flat .

something interfering ? cordless phone?

Router should have a reset button, so reset it.

Someone else nearby could have got themselves a Wireless Router that's using the same channel as yours. So it's kind of like two people talking at the same time and at the same volume, you can hear each one but you need to get closer to them.

So check the instructions and configuration of your Router and see if you can change the channel that is uses (which will be a number between about 1 and 10 IIRC).

Badgers that sounds like a likely diagnosis .
We live in an upstairs flat and this has come on so suddenly that I was beginning to wonder if it could be some piece of equipment thry've just got .
Do you know if the other user will be having same problem as us ?

Change the channel on your router..my neighbour has a digi sender which interferes with my wireless .I changed channel problem solved

BadgersPaws · 18/06/2010 10:16

If it's a new piece of equipment then your neighbours may not know that it should be performing better than perhaps it is. Then if you change your channel and the problem is fixed they might suddenly get a better range and be a bit surprised.

Ok - channel changed .
The shop/guy I bought router from did it remotely with no charge ,so all working well and I'm a happy bunny!

Might be nice to know what he did, and (unless you know the shop/guy very well) it sounds like you might need to beef up security as it sounds like he can do what he wants (helpful, true, but leaves you at a disadvantage if he has passwords and you don't) IYSWIM.

Yes ,that did cross my mind ...
