My DH said he'll get me an iphone for my b'day - great - however I am still locked into a contract with 3 for the next 6 months. Can I buy an iphone and use it with my contract sum card.

I really can't justify having 2 phones/ contracts on the go but I don't really understand why ts only available through a small number of retailers.

If I can't get an iphone I won't change mine as I'd like it to be compatible with my Mac, rather than another gadget...

I am pretty sure you can only use your iPhone with the sim of one of the providers. Otherwise all the features won't work. iPhone 4 is apparently going to have a micro sim so it will be different anyway. I know what you mean , I ran two phones for a few months when iPhone first came out such was my excitement for one!

Yes you can buy an iPhone without a contract and use your sim.

Just make sure you have an unlimited Internet use thingy on your sim.

comixminx · 08/06/2010 07:45

Have you tried it, Alouiseg? That's not my understanding from when I bought one last year - I bought it through Apple rather than via O2 but I still needed to activate it and suchlike, which I think was all via O2.

You would need a 3G sim which unless you have a smart phone on your existing contract you might to be able to get.

The easy option here is to just wait until the end of your contract and get one then, six months isn't that long and it is only a phone.

Alouiseg · 08/06/2010 08:41

Yes, I have a 3G which my sim went into, i just pay for a bolt on Internet.

If you couldn't do it then you wouldn't be able to buy them without a contract.

comixminx · 08/06/2010 09:59

I didn't think you could buy them without a contract - or at least some connection to the official providers O2 or Orange (I'm on PAYG with O2). You live and learn! Glad to know you've actually done it.

Alouiseg · 08/06/2010 10:16

I have a 3G iPhone with my old 02 sim in with a bolt on. Tis peasy

comixminx · 08/06/2010 11:46

Yesbut - the OP is with 3 not O2. I wonder if it will still work? I mean it ought to, seeing as the SIMs are standard, but it is a slightly different case - thought you'd tried it with some other provider, not O2 or Orange.

"The easy option here is to just wait until the end of your contract and get one then, six months isn't that long and it is only a phone."

No no no no no no no! You are insane, woman.

Ewe · 08/06/2010 13:05

Not insane! Just sensible

I do have an iPhone 3GS but I wouldn't be forking out £400 to buy one off contract when I could just wait 6 months and then the iPhone 4G will probably be a pretty good deal with a not too expensive contract.

It is just a phone, a pretty amazing phone but still just a phone, I will however admit that it's gods gift to parenting a toddler

DD absolutely loves mine. We were choosing sofas a few weeks back and spent hours in the shop. She was sitting there flicking through photos, playing games and watching videos, all operated herself. not bad for a 2.4yo. Everyone was staring at her

inmypants · 08/06/2010 14:03

sorry been out - thanks for your replies and just confirmed that it seems quite complicated! Trying to confirm exactly how long my contract is....

Wait til the new one comes out though, don't buy one now!

Ewe · 08/06/2010 18:58

Yep, my DD loves it too, she even knows my passcode! It's terrifying how adept toddlers appear to be at picking things up. I have had to start hiding it!
