As per title - a friend uses Snow Leopard and will be needing to use secure FTP to upload a site to VPS hosting, so can anyone recommend SFTP app (or SSH with FTP) - preferably a free application, if possible, please.

ASAP?

Snorbs · 28/05/2010 20:31

A Mac-using friend of mine uses Cyberduck for that kind of thing.

It might also be worth a look at PuTTY - that's what I use on Windows and I think there is a Unix version although I dunno if there's a specific OSX port.

NetworkGuy · 28/05/2010 20:54

Thanks Snorbs - had not looked for a port of PuTTY. Will search for Cyberduck.

Katisha - is ASAP a Mac App ? Just never heard of it. Will search for it anyway.

Heh heh

NetworkGuy · 28/05/2010 21:01

Ah, have found a few places recommend Fugu and Cyberduck looks like it incorporates a pile of different protocols so handy for the long term. Have seen mention of ASAP as a software firm, thanks Katisha, and hunting for their applications now.

Oh god there actually is one!

NetworkGuy · 28/05/2010 21:21

OK, lots of TLAs but my query was serious...

cocolepew · 28/05/2010 21:22

What on earth are you talking about?

cocolepew · 28/05/2010 21:22

hahaha at Katisha

NetworkGuy · 28/05/2010 21:29

Sorry cocolepew but if you cannot get a bit geeky here, then where the hell can you ?

SFTP is Secure File Transfer Protocol ...

... but am not going to waffle my way through the others.

[head explodes]

FileZilla.

PuTTY on OSX doesn't make sense - OSX has SSH built in, Google it.

Katisha · 29/05/2010 21:42

Mine was an FLA

cocolepew · 29/05/2010 21:44

Mines a MILF

NetworkGuy · 30/05/2010 11:16

True Katisha... LOL cocolepew.

Thanks mranchovy will look out for FileZilla. Had known of SSH from terminal session but unaware of whether PuTTY would offer a GUI for the {S}FTP aspect, as I've not used PuTTY myself.

mranchovy · 30/05/2010 14:07

Nah, the clue is in the name - PuTTY.

Snorbs · 30/05/2010 21:36

I didn't know OSX had SSH built-in. But then I've only played with an OSX Mac. I've not done any serious work with one.

I would love to see the average Mac user trying to drive a command-line SSH client .

mranchovy · 30/05/2010 23:25

That's a goood point Snorbs, but if the guy is trying to drive a VPS he is going to have to get down and dirty on the command line.

Or is it running Webmin? Not for anything serious I hope.

DHS · 02/06/2010 15:24

Transmit is the best FTP app for OS X but it's $34: panic.com/transmit

Even better than that is ExpanDrive which is $39.95: expandrive.com/mac

NetworkGuy · 02/06/2010 21:02

No, not Webmin. Thanks for the suggestions, DHS. Snorbs - just go into terminal utility on an OSX Mac and you have the command line to work with right before your eyes.

Looks like the SSH utility I came across for Windows has a more friendly UI for FTP, all in one package, and free to boot.

Thanks for the heads up on ExpanDrive. This opens up a whole load of possibilities for me when I need the ease of use of Dropbox but can't live with the potential synchronisation conflicts - remote Git repo hosting for instance.
