Thunderbird - archived messages and 'local' folders

Is anyone a whizz with Thunderbird?

I use Thunderbird on my MacBook to access messages from a work e-mail account. I have a feeling I haven't set up the archiving properly as old messages seem to have disappeared from my inbox and when I do 'search all messages' I can't find them. Should I have set up a 'local folder' for archived messages in the Copies and Folders bit of the Tools menu?

hope someone can help

Perhaps the question is Thunderbird using MacBook geeks...

I have TB but have only just started using the latest version (been 2 to3 years since I was last using it) so am unqualified to give much useful advice right now...
