We recently bought a docking station which is also a radio alarm clock for £45 from asda - it's an iLove or iLuv. Very cheap but surprisingly good sound quality.

The Altec Lansing speakers I recommended on this thread are great - they're for iPhones but work just as well with iPods. But at £120 ish and the cheapest Nano at £118 they might push your budget.

The best ones are Bose if you can stretch to a bit more money. I've seen them for £250 somewhere although I think they're normally nearer £300. They really are fantastic though.

thanks for the suggestions. Ended up with the 5th gen ipod nano and these speakers which had nearly 500 good reviews so hope they will be ok.
