Is it possible to store my home movies online?

I want to upload them like I do my photos. Not to share them, just to back them up.

Im having pc problems and want to wipe pc. I have backed up onto disc but if its a virus causing the problem, Ill end up moving it onto "clean" system!

There are plenty of storage solutions out there - Mozy is fairly cheap, as is CrashPlan.

Another place to look if you haven't got too many files, is if your ISP provides some online storage. If it's under 2GB of data then Dropbox is certainly worth looking at as it's free - over 2GB though is quite expensive, so would look at Mozy or CrashPlan.

Bear in mind that if a large amount then it'll take a long time to upload even with a good broadband connection. You might be better off (if only for short term use rather than long term backups) getting an external hard drive.

I would also recommend getting a good antivirus - AVG is free and very effective. Moving files online won't get rid of your virus problem if there is one.

Thanks RD. I had AVG 8.5 and it messed up my pc which is crashing several times a day, and thats after it takes me 5 or 6 restarts to get it to work! No viruses left - just the damage avg caused that I cant fix by restore. Im moving files to back them up, then I will strip pc and reinstall.

Online storage is not suitable for video data because of the time it takes to upload.

DV is 36mbps. I have upstream bandwidth of 384kbps, which is the norm for consumer broadband in the UK which means 1 second of DV video takes 96 seconds to upload. So an hour of DV, which is 16GB, would take your full upstream bandwidth for 4 days.

As the Duck says, an external drive is the way to go.

Yeah tell me about it. I back up 140GB with Mozy - it's taken months to get it all up there. (Our broadband is particularly crap, to boot)

Righto, will look into it. Have been running scans all day and think Ive got it sorted. Managed to restart computer and be able to use it on first try but Im still going to get an external drive to back up everything.
