How do they do that and by deleting my history does this mean that I am safe.

Ok, I'm getting the message, that by deleting my history isn't the answer. To be fair, I work for a school and I don't think their internet monitoring is up to scratch. Nonetheless am thinking that I should be aware that they know what I am doing.

Correct deleting your history won't hide anything, basically if they are doing it right they can see everything you are doing and it all gets recorded regardless of what precautions you take

bleurgh. That is such horridness. Ok, so what if I play patiencense or minefield. Does that show up as well.

There are ways of monitoring what programs are being run on a computer, but I've not known an IT department paranoid enough to do that, it would be easier for them just the applications they don’t want people to use.

As said though it is possible...

You should be okay but like Badger says there are ways. Highly unlikely though, more likely they are just monitoring websites.

Thanks SPB, good to know.

I got called in to my boss at work to be told that I had been writing things on websites I shouldn't have been.
That would have been when I called my boss a "WANKER" on the Mumsnet Ante-natal thread .
I think that their monitoring software picked up when you wrote certain words. What I never found out was if they could read what I wrote on Mumsnet at home-God, I hope not.

WebDude · 16/10/2009 23:24

Well, knowing you had typed 'wanker' is one thing... if they linked that to the web page it would allow them to see the thread on MN and then search for all posts you had made.

Presumably it was something of a verbal warning about what you did in work time (assume it wasn't in lunch break) but what does the company IT policy describe as allowed or not allowed ? Do they actually ban internet use for anything other than work ?

tvfriend · 17/10/2009 10:15

It was more like a quiet work not to write things like that while at work...
We were allowed to use the internet at work within reason. My boss waa a bit of an idiot and I think they wrote it off as a bit of hormonal pregnancy ramblings. (I'm sure it was noted on file though- don't work there any more). My bosses boss was the one who spoke to me and he was actually quite nice about it.
I know they monitored use of inappropriarten websites as a few people got sacked looking at things they shouldn't have.
