On start up it just flashes up 'safe mode' that's it! Nothing else happens. No options, no way of doing anything else! Happened to anyone?

You would normally start up your pc in safe mode if you needed to remove spyware / viruses etc, it's a way of starting pc only allowing essential programmes needed to run the operating system.

You may have accidentally started in safe mode by hitting the f8 key on start up.

You should be able to hit enter for your pc to start, then close all programmes, shut down pc and when you start up again it should be back to normal.

Hope that helps.

What happens if you try to boot into safe mode on purpose by pressing f8 while it's starting up?

If that gives you the safe mode menu there are options such as go back to last working configuration etc

If not there are other possibilities. If you have a Windows CD with it you can boot from that and it will help you repair windows.

To boot from a CD you may have to tell the bios to change the boot order.

Generally while you are starting up the screen will say "press DEL" or "Press F2" etc to enter setup. It varies a bit. Doing that gets you into the bios.

But try the safe mode thing first
