MorningPaper's post reminded me I have been wanting to ask! Everytime I see the i-phone advertisement and they show really cool little things you can get on your iPhone I think I must find some. What can you recommend?

I have loads of kid's games on mine. It keeps dd very entertained on the bus!

SamVimesIsMyHero · 06/04/2009 14:14

Yes I have a few too, dd loves them! Any other non-child related ones?

complete works of shakespeare - free!

london underground map

beecells lite (I find this mindless game totally hypnotic )

got a few e-book applications but find none of them work very well - they keep flipping from portrait to landscape, regardless of how I hold the ipod?

free drum pad is fun

shakespell and wordpopper are ok

thesaurus and dictionary

google earth

I've got 3 pages of really rubbish applications too

RustyBunny · 06/04/2009 14:48

Tioti TV - gives you listings of what's on, and you can create your own custom lists & it will give you a link to previous episodes on iPlayer

Shazam identifies songs that are playing & link you to info about the song & to itunes so you can buy it

Lots of word games - Textropolis, wurdle, bookworm, WordJong, chicktionary.

Puzzle games - numba, blocked, Labyrinth, tetris, quadrum, bejewelled, mahjong, centipede,Theseus, fuzzle, jewel quest, bubble town, imaze, Maze finger, Tower of hanoi, hanjie (though it's called picross)

Solebon card games - it has about 50 solitaire games on the paid version

Books -Complete works of Jane Austen, several PG Wodehouse books and the iPhone 'Missing manual' which is useful though rather US oriented.

Just for fun - lolcats, koi pond, iPint and a totally pointless bubble wrap popping thing.

I also have an art program which would probably be very good if I had an ounce of artistic talent....

bramblebooks · 06/04/2009 15:48

don't forget facebook and twitter!

SamVimesIsMyHero · 06/04/2009 17:30

WOW Rusty thanks! I had forgotten you were the iPhone goddess. You helped me set up my email on it ages ago when I first got it (probably under a different name I think). Now I remember why there were declarations of love

Mitchy - underground map is essential, I needed one only last week!

Brambles - what is Twitter, I keep hearing about it but don't know what it is

Info Apps

Mobile Allowance
WeatherPro - much better than the app that comes with the phone
TubeDeluxe - if you travel around London
Sunrise
FlightTrack

Entertainment Apps
Shazam - fantastic and it's free
WunderRadio
Ancient Frog
Bejeweled
Distant Shore - a bit like Oceangram
FlightControl
Penguin
Pocket God
ZenBound

Love my iPhone and spend too much on apps

RubberDuck · 06/04/2009 17:40

Current favourites:

Facebook

Typing Genius (unlocks cute little icons/emotes - follow instructions on the app store to unlock)

Google Earth

IM+ Lite

Last.fm

MobileFamilyTree (probably useless without the corresponding mac version though)

NetNewsWire (awesome newsreader, especially if you also use the equivalent NewsGator RSS reader on your PC/Mac too as it all nicely syncs)

Complete Works of Shakespeare

TouchGoal

TwitterFon

WeatherPro

2Across

Chicktionary

Fieldrunners (Best.Game.Ever)

Solitaire City

Sudoku

TanZen

Wolfenstein 3D

ZenBound

Distant Shores (this is so bloody addictive, it isn't true)

iBonsai (silly but cute)

iPint

iZenGarden

KoiPond (this is just gorgeous and so relaxing)

PocketGod (regularly updated and really funny)

FlappyTheBat · 06/04/2009 17:46

RubberDuck, is Chicktionary good?

I know what you mean about DistantShore being addictive, just have to keep walking along that beach

CoteDAzur · 06/04/2009 17:47

Skype!

Call online friends free and pay peanuts for international etc calls. It's brilliant.

RubberDuck · 06/04/2009 17:50

Chicktionary - it's entertaining and it's cutesy. There's been a rash of cheaper games out there that do the same thing since though, so is worth having a good look around. The word game I use by far the most though is 2Across - a simple crossword importer thing!

SamVimesIsMyHero · 06/04/2009 17:52

Where do I find distant shores, Typing Genius and chicktionary?

FlappyTheBat · 06/04/2009 17:53

Go to the apps store and type in their names in the search function, enjoy!!

RubberDuck · 06/04/2009 18:00

WordFu looks awesome but I'm on a self-imposed ban on the iTunes store atm after going a bit nuts after getting my iTouch

bramblebooks · 06/04/2009 18:14

twitter is something I'm still getting into - jury's out a bit, but it's a 'rolling ' service of 'tweets' - 160 character statements. Like facebook updates only. I 'follow' the bbc news service, so I can see breaking news, I can also follow friends and by searching particular trends of things I like (like hens ) I've found some interesting tweeters/online bloggers to read.

I use the free twitterfon app.

bramblebooks · 06/04/2009 18:17

the london underground app I use is tubedeluxe

MmeLindt · 08/04/2009 12:49

Skype is fab. I can call my mum in UK from Switzerland and it only costs me 4eu a month. Only works with WiFi connection though, but that is because my mobile phone provider does not let me I think.

Facebook, because I can share photos with all the family back home.

Mail translator

TvGuide

iSteam is fab. You blow into the microphone and the screen steams up then you can draw on it. Keeps the DC amused for ages.

Huff Post, Huffington Post for iPhone

Wunderradio so that I can listen to BBC radio

Shazam

Weather pro

A unit conversion thingy for baking

ProCamera makes taking photos easier but it is a bit slow

ColourSplash

Balloonanimals, Animatch, Sketchmania, Buddy the Bus, First Word Animals are all great for keeping the DC amused when in restaurants.

I spend far too much time and money on apps.
