Arrrgggghhhh

I've just spent over an hour on the phone to my wireless router company, then about 30 mins on the phone to my ISP, and although obviously I am now connected to the internet, it isn't wireless and is via an ethernet lead running into the laptop.

The wireless router was originally connected directly into the rear of the desktop, but the desktop is broken so I disconnected it and tried to re-connect it via the laptop. After many minutes hours on the phone, it is now working ...but not without the wire.

Where am I going wrong?

Help please ...

I had this problem too, until a few days ago when I managed to sort it!

Who is your internet provider?

I am with tiscali, they sent me a wireless router, Hurrah I thought! Wrong! It sat in a drawer for a year because I couldnt get it too work.

I finally phoned them this week to sort it out - kept on the phone for ages. THe lady got me to change loads of details, literally loads to allow wireless to work.

Goodness knows how much it will cost me on my phone bill - but wireless does work perfectly now

Sympathy for you though

Thanks anyway

Is it their equipment that isnt working or yours?

If it is their stuff that isnt working I would complain because they are being hopeless!!!!

I am keen to get away from Tiscali asap - they have annoyed me!!!

LadyTrimmer · 02/04/2009 22:17

I think you have t he same problem as me.

My wireless connection won't work when my desktop is asleep. I think that the destop is in some way sitting between the router and the internet...not sure how to fix it though - I have started a thread about it.

For you - if you are totally taking your desktop out of the circuit maybe you just need to set up a new network which doesn't involve your desktop.

have you checked your wireless card in your laptop is still working? - ~I have this now - so this lappy is working off the ethernet til I get a replacement card. They do just 'go'. apparently.

RustyBunny · 02/04/2009 22:22

Obvious question which I would hope the phone support person asked, but you never know. Is your wireless switch actually turned on?

LadyTrimmer · 02/04/2009 22:32
Pan · 02/04/2009 22:34

its button/switch with a sort of upsidedown umberella sign. somewhere on the body of the laptop.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 02/04/2009 22:35

Security software blocking it?

LadyTrimmer · 02/04/2009 22:56

I had interpretted that the OP has previously had a wiFi connection...which has broken as a result of the desktop breaking. Which would suggest that the laptop wireless card etc. is functioning properly but cannot connect to the internet as the desktop (or lack of desktop) is blocking access (which is the problem I am having).

Simplysally · 02/04/2009 23:24

I'm going to watch this thread as I have a similar problem. OH bought me a web n walk dongle which temporarily solved the issue of wireless for now .

Quadrophenia · 02/04/2009 23:28

you need to reset your router and then reconfigure your laptop to it rather than through your desktop

Plonker · 03/04/2009 13:41

Thanks for all replies

Where to start answering the q's ...

Yurtgirl - "Is it their equipment that isnt working or yours?"

All equipment is apparantly working, so not quite sure what's going on

Ladytrimmer - "if you are totally taking your desktop out of the circuit maybe you just need to set up a new network which doesn't involve your desktop"

I've done this - I explained to the router people (Belkin) that I had removed the desktop and they reconfigured the set up

Pan - "have you checked your wireless card in your laptop is still working"

It is built in wireless - do you still need a wireless card if the wireless is built in?

Rustybunny - "Is your wireless switch actually turned on?"

Yes, it's switched on

Ilovemydog - "Security software blocking it?"

I don't know?! How would I know?

Quadrophenia - "you need to reset your router and then reconfigure your laptop to it rather than through your desktop"

The Belkin guy talked me through how to re-set the router and reconfigured the laptop, so I don't think its this ...

Arrrrggghhhh

yes - mine's is "built-in". A card is inside the laptop. If it isn't there, or not working, you can discover this by looking in the 'device manager' list. Forget how to do this but it is just a few clicks away. Someone will be able to say on here hopefully.

I could be barking up the wrong tree, but it could be something as simple as this.
