it is a child lying in bed late at night and not asleep but staring at a digital clock-'s wet dream.

(I am concerned about my punctuation in that sentence...)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/02/2009 22:25

thats pretty cool

MaureenMLove · 13/02/2009 22:28

eh?

YetMoreTech · 13/02/2009 22:31

Far be it from me to come across as a geeky, BO-ridden, coke drinking, pizza eating nerd with no friends or social skills, but Slur is right on the money...

Unix (the computer operating system used on the various Mumsnet servers, as it happens) measures time as the number of seconds since 1st January 1970. 39 years, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, 60 minutes an hour, 60 seconds a minute, gives you about 123XXXXXXX seconds. And it turns out that later tonight it will be 1234567890 precisely.

Having said all that, I didn't know it was happening (can't think why I hadn't checked), but that Slur is a smart arse. Perhaps we should give her a job? Official clock watcher, or summat?

Hassled · 13/02/2009 22:34

= 39.121 years since what? Unix began? I gather that on 1st Jan 1970 something big happened .

sfxmum · 13/02/2009 22:34

slur not that he has shared with me, he tries to keep displays of extreme geekyness private and I thank him for it

but I did get a longer than expected explanation, he liked that and I did not mind it, I can see how it can be interesting

Hassled · 13/02/2009 22:35

Damn those cross posts and slowness of calculators.

WilfSell · 13/02/2009 22:36

So when does Debian time start then?

MaureenMLove · 13/02/2009 22:40

You know what YMT? I love you, really I do, but you lost me at Unix (the computer operating system....)

psychomum5 · 13/02/2009 22:42

so how can we veiw it then??

inquiring minds want to know!

S1ur · 13/02/2009 22:45

Well I opened a terminal window and typed some clever things...

or you could look here

TheInvisibleManDidIt · 13/02/2009 22:45

Hmm..have just shared this with Dh. He is giving me a look, as if I've had too many glasses of wine ( as if)

I think it's rather interesting btw..

psychomum5 · 13/02/2009 22:47

thanks slur

WilfSell · 13/02/2009 22:52

Is it now?

WilfSell · 13/02/2009 22:52

Now?

WilfSell · 13/02/2009 22:53

Or now?

psychomum5 · 13/02/2009 22:53

wilf, there is 38mins yet........have some patience girlie!!!

S1ur · 13/02/2009 22:54

arf Wilf.

Do you think around the world there'll be geeks sidling up to hot disdainful girls trying to convince them it is like NYE?

OP posts:
Jux · 13/02/2009 22:58

I think it is particularly exciting as it is happening on Friday 13th.
