Katy this is not helping... to connect wirelessly, you need to know the password (WEP/WPA code). Please can you try to find that out by looking in the router configuration screens.
When connecting the machine directly to the router, the password is not needed. Thus why I feel it is this password that you are needing.

Please log into the router, select Security and try to establish what encryption is being used and what the password is.

KatyMac · 24/12/2008 22:01

There are 4 keys 0101010101, 0202020202, etc

KatyMac · 24/12/2008 22:03

I have a wireless connection now - it just isn't working

I have a wired connection which is working

nannynick · 24/12/2008 22:04

Above those keys, it says something like: Security Mode: 64 bit WEP

Does yours say 64 bit WEP, 128 bit WEP, something else... what does it say there?

One of the Keys will have a Green button next to it. What is the key next to the green button?

KatyMac · 24/12/2008 22:08

64bit, hex, static green button next to all three

nannynick · 24/12/2008 22:09

Well, once you have that key, write it down.
Then go to the laptop you are trying to connect (which hopefully is still at the prompt for the password), and enter the key.

nannynick · 24/12/2008 22:11

The manual I have says it's next to ONE key, not 3 of them! Ah... this is hopeless.

Do you have any other wireless devices connected to this router?

KatyMac · 24/12/2008 22:12

2 laptops?

Nick give up

DD will have to use it with the wire

OP posts:
nannynick · 24/12/2008 22:16

Yes, I think that is best, until you can get someone who can physically see the screens on the router and establish what the password is.

KatyMac · 24/12/2008 22:23

I am writing this on the new computer

With a wire

So now all I need to do is get rid of the wire

I don't think there's any practical way of recovering the password. The easiest thing is to just set a new one.

Log into the router again and go to Wireless -> Security.

Set the security mode to WPA-PSK in the drop-down box.

Type a new password in the Pre-Shared Key (PSK) box and save it.

That's it.

When you try to connect wirelessly you'll be prompted for the new key, so don't forget it.

KatyMac · 25/12/2008 17:23

I could cry

We walked into my dad's house

CHanged one setting "Use windows to configure your wireless setting"
& it came up first time

OP posts:
singleWhiteMale · 25/12/2008 19:12

He probably hasn't got a security key set on his router. At least it shows that everything is capable of working. Just set a new key on your router and you'll be sorted.

maddoguk · 25/12/2008 19:16

Yep its definately they key, just go a create a new one.

KatyMac · 25/12/2008 20:33

No I have the key for each

I even logged one laptop out & re typed in the password so I can be sure about what it is

singleWhiteMale · 25/12/2008 22:29

If you're sure that you're using the correct WEP/WPA key the only thing I can think is that you have 'mac address filtering' on your router.

There will be an option for it in the security or firewall setting of the router. If it's enabled, I would just disable it.

nannynick · 26/12/2008 00:00

Separate key for each laptop?
Thats not usual. Is that what you meant?
The router does support MAC filtering. Should find the option under Security -> Firewall on the router.
Also the router can be limited to only supporting a specified number of DHCP clients - so yet another setting to check.
Find your router manual, then see the security section.

maddoguk · 26/12/2008 09:54

I would avoid mac filtering if you can. A good wpa password should suffice. For the purpose of testing just try katymac and see if that works as the wpa key then change it to a letter a number one afterwards. Its rare to have a machine specific password unless your running a hosting business.

KatyMac · 26/12/2008 16:34

Key for my dads network & key for my network

I logged off a laptop from my network then logged it on again to prove that I knew my key

So I am putting the right info in, the network card works & I am a failure

I am giving up packing & leaving the country; I will take it into the shop when I get back

Sorry to have been a pain & thanks for all your help

OP posts:
frasersmummy · 26/12/2008 16:42

you are not a failure..sounds something very weird going

so you have a wired connection??

and you have the correct network key..

what happens when you run ipconfig now katy??

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 26/12/2008 16:44

Katy - haven't read the whole thread but have you tried changing the channel the router is broadcasting on?

You need to access your router settings.

KatyMac · 26/12/2008 18:46

I've given up....really I am running away (somewhere hot)

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 26/12/2008 18:54

lol katy you poor thing

have you tried switching off the router (i.e. totally unplugging it from the power for about 30 seconds) then plugging it back in?

Quite often if people visit with laptops we have to reset (i.e. just unplug it and then turn it back on again) the router before anyway can connect (for some reason!)
