its the wep number you need to key in, and it is case sensitive, so any letters in caps have to be put in as caps

its 26 numbers and letters long iirc

my orange livebox has two buttons labelled 1 and 2 on it, i pushed button one, the wireless light on the router flashed, then i entered the wep number and it connected

have you searched for available networks?

lou33 · 24/12/2008 16:14

have you called bt to help them guide you through setting it up?

frasersmummy · 24/12/2008 17:17

you said you had given up but

click start, run and then type cmd and press enter

in the black box type ipconfig

this should give you some information

you are looking for default gateway.. it will probs be something like 192.168.0.1

type this number into your internet browser address bar in the format of 192 etc

if it connects to a router page then its a problem between the router and the isp

if it comes up page cannot be displayed its between the pc and laptop

good luck

KatyMac · 24/12/2008 17:30

No - there were no ip addresses when I clicked on that

Is it a laptop? If so, there is often a key that disables the wireless. Look for a 'mast' symbol and toggle it.

Have you checked the IP address of each computer/device? Use IPCONFIG to obtain IP address details.
Make a list of them - so you can refer to it in future. No two should be the same.

KatyMac · 24/12/2008 20:42

OK ip address on new computer completely different to Ip address on old computer.....not even close

So how do I change it?

OP posts:
singleWhiteMale · 24/12/2008 20:45

what IP address are you getting on the new one?

nannynick · 24/12/2008 20:46

List all the IP's please Katy.
Are you using DHCP, or have you allocated each IP manually?

KatyMac · 24/12/2008 20:46

169.254.57.15 (?)

it shouldn't be that even I know that

OP posts:
KatyMac · 24/12/2008 20:48

Should be 192.168.2.3 (I think)

& there isn't a default gateway OR connection-specific DNS suffix

OP posts:
singleWhiteMale · 24/12/2008 20:49

That's an auto-allocated IP address. You're either not connected to your network or you don't have a working DHCP server.

Are you sure your wifi adaptor is connecting to your network?

KatyMac · 24/12/2008 20:50

no

it sees it & it knows it's name

OP posts:
KatyMac · 24/12/2008 20:52

I restated Dhsomething or other & now when I ipconfig my media is disconnected & my ip addresses are all 0

OP posts:
KatyMac · 24/12/2008 20:54

ow it is back to the silly ip address

OP posts:
singleWhiteMale · 24/12/2008 20:56

If it works with a wired connection you don't need to fiddle with the dhcp settings.

Presumably you're on vista. If you go to 'Connect To' is your wifi network on the list? If you select it do you get prompted for a WEP/WPA key? What exactly happens?

KatyMac · 24/12/2008 20:58

No XP

I wish it was working

OP posts:
nannynick · 24/12/2008 20:58

I suspect the WEP/WPA key, or possibly MAC addressing security. Is the router restricting access to devices for which it already knows the MAC address?

KatyMac · 24/12/2008 20:59

Ummm don't understand the question

OP posts:
nannynick · 24/12/2008 21:00

On XP

Start, Connect To, Wireless Network Connection

It should bring up the Wireless Network Configuration box. Click: Refresh Network List

What do you see?

KatyMac · 24/12/2008 21:02

Wireless Network Connection limited or no connectivity
