iphone query - trying to get started

OK I have already established with the fabulous help of retiredgoth1 that my geriatric Mac needs a software update to get the sync with the phone.

My query is though does the phone HAVE to be synched with itunes to work at all? Why can't I just bung the SIM card in and make calls just like I would with a normal phone?

It can only be registered via iTunes, sorry!

It does have to sync to work I think, no clue why though

Can't stand mine tbh it takes me soooo long to text etc. Although it's good for Mumsnetting on!

OOOOhhh sooooo frustrating! I wanted to play with my new toy this evening and now I can't. I think I shall just lie on th floor, thrashing my arms and legs and scream my head off as this approach seems to work well with my children.
