I am having difficulty starting up my computer. I disconected it to take it somewhere and now it only starts up afetr about 30 - 40 attempts. I have a choice of opening it using the last known settings or something like that or opening it using windows. I am scared to switch it off again as I need to access it for work. My daughter was here at the weekend and said something about a problem with her msn. I tried it and all these boxes asking if we wanted to update realplayer came up. As soon as we switched off msn they all disappeared. I have McCaffee on the computer.

If you haven't already got one, buy a USB flash / disk drive of the right size to be able to copy all your important docs / pics / etc. onto it so you have a backup in case things go really messy. Don't forget to back up any license key information if you have it and, the one most people forget, your web browser bookmarks.

Once that's done, you are at least in a position to know that if the computer fell apart and never booted again, you still have everything you need.

When you say it's failing to boot - what do you mean? You press the power button and the light doesn't come on or it gets into windows and just hangs or freezes up?

It just wont start up. I get the option to start in "safe mode" and another option and then "open in Windows" or using "last known settings". I have kept it on for the last few days and have ordered an 8 Gigabyte USB so that is coming Monday. Where do I find my Web browser bookmarks?, thanks for your help.

In internet explorer on the File Menu click Import and Export. Then do Next and it will offer to export Favorites (to a file you can later import the same way)

so which option do you choose ? - worth trying going into safe mode, and then rebooting again after that.
