Probably a basic EXCEL question.............but I don't even know what it is called to do a search on HELP !?

So, you know when you have a 'title' or subject in column 1, and then there are sub-titles / subjects which are not initially shown.............unless you click the '+' sign......and when you do lots more rows come up....then you can click '-' to get it back just to the basic information / title.

Does anyone know how to create the + thing so I can add subtitle-like things?

SOunds like the SUBTOTAL formula

"Returns a subtotal in a list or database. It is generally easier to create a list with subtotals by using the Subtotal command in the Outline group on the Data tab. Once the subtotal list is created, you can modify it by editing the SUBTOTAL function."

says XL 2K7 help

OpenOffice Calc has the subtotals command under

Data>SUbtotals

and it's a pretty good copy of Excel 02/03 so I'd assume that's where it is.

I thought you meant grouping. Try Data > Group and Outline - Group. Thiswill then give you the ability to expand or hide the subcategories.

A word of advice - if you want the Title to still show when the subtitles are hidden (i.e. thereisjust the + sign on display), then only group the subtitles - don't include the row with the title in it.

No it is not teh subtotal formula.

That is an addition based calculation.

In OO

you need to select the rows yo want to "hide

Then go to Data menu > Group and outline>group

Alternatively I think you can select the rows to hide a press F12

It is Outlines !

(not quite worked out the grouping to keep title but Fanj's thing makes sense and hopefully by midnight it will be clear )

Here's a bit more clarification on how to keep the title:

Row 1: Title
Row 2: Subtitle
Row 3: Subtitle
Row 4: Subtitle

Highlight rows 2-4. Go to Data -> Group & Outline -> Group

Rows 2-4 will now be hidden with a little + in their place. Row 1 will still show the Title.
