How do i check to see if there is sound on my PC

I have a fairly old pc upstairs in (5yrs old), which i have just started up for the children to use.

I have a slot on the back of the tower for speakers. Does this mean that i can only get sound through using speakers or is there any easy way to get sound through the PC.

Many thanks

Yes you need speakers, but they can be quite cheap (about £10). A few monitors have speakers bolted on the sides and have a cable to put into the back of the tower.
