Buying new digital camera...how big a memory stick do I need?

I have decided on the Sony Cybershot W130 or W170 (depending on the sale of a few bits I have).
What size memory stick do I need? My old camera had 256mb, but all the recommendations seem to be for 4mb now .
I know the picture quality is better and so needs more memory but 4mb really???

Please tell me how much you have? Thanks.

Whatever size you decide, you might want to get it from here

Very good site and very cheap.

WendyWeber · 13/08/2008 21:44

4GB is better value than 2 (& 2 is better value than 1) - is it one of those micro memory sticks? They are dead cheap these days.

I have a panasonic lumix and 2 x 2GB cards, find its better to have a spare, than a really huge one.

hth.

About this size -----.

WendyWeber · 13/08/2008 21:47

£13 for 2GB, 4 is £25 I think.

I think I've got 2 in my compact camera, I also have a DSLR, not sure what I've got in there but for the sake of £12 it saves you having to worry about running out

WendyWeber · 13/08/2008 21:48

OH, it also depends on how many megapixels you are going to use as standard - double the mp = half the number of pics stored (I think!)

VanillaPumpkin · 13/08/2008 21:54

I think 2gb is probably enough for now...I might live to regret it, but hey I can then buy a 4gb and have a spare....
I don't actually want an excuse to keep the photos on the camera either as I lost my last camera and dd's sports day shots with it .
Thank you.

I ordered a 4 gb as it was £3 more than the 2gb and I can now get a comically large amount of photos on my camera .
Tbh I think it is far too big. 1 gb would probably have been enough. I always have been greedy though . New camera is amazing!!

Why do you need to have a memory stick for your camera?

WendyWeber · 16/08/2008 21:21

To store photos & music on - they come with a minute amount of inbuilt storage.

SqueakyPop · 16/08/2008 21:30

Who don't you just download to PC? How does a memory stick even fit into a camera? The cables have only male connectors.

VanillaPumpkin · 16/08/2008 21:40

The inbuilt storage can only take 3 photos . So the stick goes in there to store the photos which I then download to the PC. Except now I can store over 1000 on my camera hee hee. The camera has a great slideshow feature though...with music .

They have a memory stick slot, SP. The USB connector is separate.

As VP pointed out in her OP, the built-in memory is only 256mb - that holds about 20 pics! A 2gb or 4gb memory stick holds loads more pics.

WendyWeber · 16/08/2008 21:41

NB when I said music I was getting confused with phones

VanillaPumpkin · 16/08/2008 21:41

Memory card rather than USB stick.
Sony seem to call them sticks though.

A memory stick is a USB jobby though. Do you mean a SD card?

If so, a 1 or 2 GB is plenty.

WendyWeber · 16/08/2008 21:44

Yes, a memory card, but Sony call them memory sticks (see my link earlier)

VanillaPumpkin · 16/08/2008 21:44

Like an SD card yes. But Sony call them memory sticks. I needed a pro duo one like WW linked to earlier on.
