Can't insert text without deleting everything following it - trying to do final essay, HELP!

I think I've hit a button by mistake on my laptop, I'm trying to go back and add stuff in - not c&p, just putting the cursor in the place and writing the odd word/sentence etc.

Instead of it just going in, it gobbles up the next bit of text IYSWIM - does anyone know what I might have hit that's caused it?

It's the Insert button. Just press it again and it'll turn Overwrite off.

Have you hit the insert key by mistake? Is your cursor a vertical line or a block?
