Cable for copying data

I've bought a new Moto phone to replace the old one. Successful transfer of Gmail but I was hoping to use a cable to transfer the other data. The instructions are to use the charging cable but obviously that isn't compatible. I have a USB to USB cable but the phone says to find a cable that fits. Do I need a specific data transfer cable?

Assuming your old phone is not an iPhone then I think you just need a USB cable with the right size connectors on each end. You can also buy adaptors that will change the connection from, for example, USB-A to USB-C which would allow you to use a cable you already have.

I'm replacing a Moto with another Moto, the cable fits perfectly but nothing happens when the two are connected. It's driving me mad!

Do you get any sort of notification on either phone when you plug the cable in? Or if not, look in settings. You might need to designate the old phone as a mass-storage device or something similar and on my phone the alert for this comes up in notifications. Your new phone might need to be in a particular mode too.

Or can you use Quickshare?

Some cables are charging only, others are data cables. What type of usb to usb? Are they the same?

These are the different types, usually dependant on age of phone
