If my brother deletes his Facebook and messenger then what happens to the conversation

My brother wants to delete his Facebook but we have an extended family messenger conversation going back many years with 3 of us in it

So what happens to it?

Is there a way to keep his part of the messenger conversation within it please?

I have read about it and some say it disappears completely and others say it just has him as a grey square profile saying FB user

Please could someone help me keep the whole conversation on messenger

He does not want to just deactivate he wants to delete

But he says the message conversation will still be there but is he correct?

What happens if I permanently delete my Facebook account?

  • Some information, such as messages you sent to friends, may still be visible to them after you've deleted your account. Copies of messages that you've sent are stored in your friends' inboxes.

Are you wanting it for nostalgia or evidence?

RTkangamummy · 18/10/2024 23:03

Thank you for replying

Definitely nostalgia as it goes back many years to when our parents were alive

Our relationship is totally friendly he doesn't want the messages to disappear for us but he just wants to delete FB for him

Depending on how much there is could you maybe screenshot the conversation, then you have it in some form if it does disappear....

RTkangamummy · 18/10/2024 23:26

I did think about that but we are talking about 9 years of conversation

He is happy for it to stay with us but he just wants FB to go away for him

I wonder if you archived the chat before he deletes his account.... would it save a version of it there 🤔

RTkangamummy · 18/10/2024 23:37

Do you know how to do that please?

OP posts:
QuestionableMouse · 18/10/2024 23:43

Are you sure it still goes back that far? Just looked at my chat with my sister and it wont load anything past Jan 2024

Messenger is available as a standalone app. Granted I have never deleted Facebook but I have deactivated it many times and it didn't affect Messenger at all. Can't he delete Facebook but keep messenger?

RTkangamummy · 18/10/2024 23:55

Just did a word search and it went back to 2017

RTkangamummy · 18/10/2024 23:56

I think if that was able to happen that he deleted Facebook but the messenger conversation stayed there that would be fabulous

If he doesn't have the separate Messenger app he should get it, sign into it and only then get rid of Facebook. I can't guarantee it won't affect it, but worth looking into

RTkangamummy · 19/10/2024 00:09

Good plan thanks

You slide the chat to the left to archive, you can then find the archived chats by pressing the three little lines in the top left hand corner of the home screen.... that's on the app. I'm no tech expert though and don't really use messenger so don't know if it would work but worth a try.

The person’s name becomes “Facebook user” and the messages all stay.

RTkangamummy · 19/10/2024 01:30

Thank you for the tip about archive

Oh that is brilliant thank you

Is that if he deleted just Facebook?

or

If he ended up deleting both Facebook and messenger?

Fb and messenger are two different apps so he can delete fb and still have messenger

RTkangamummy · 19/10/2024 01:37

Ok thanks

We are moving our conversation over to WhatsApp so future conversation doesn't need to be on messenger just don't want the previous conversation to disappear

But it sounds like everything will still be there

Thank you guys so much

I've no experience of using these myself, but have considered in the past, might be worth a look? They print your messages into a book.
